I never thought about quitting.
After all, I wasn't the one who screwed up. No reason I should have to leave.
But when I was heading out after work, Matthias stopped me.
He looked conflicted, muttering to himself, "Are you still mad? I didn't know you were getting discharged today."
"I had no idea Calla was gonna post that wedding announcement in the company chat. It was an accident."
I gave him a look and my mouth ran faster than my brain.
"You're so good at passing the buck, you should've been a politician instead."
"Really treating people like they're idiots and don't know any better. Such an 'accident.'"
I hadn't been this sarcastic in ages. Matthias just stared at me, stunned.
He glanced at me, like something occurred to him. "How's your injury?"
The back of my head was still wrapped in gauze. Couldn't see what was underneath.
When Matthias brought it up, I hesitated for a moment.
I didn't want him to keep bugging me, so I was about to tell him about the memory loss.
But then Calla came running over and grabbed onto his arm.
"You promised we'd go to dinner together. I've been waiting forever."
Her attempt to change the subject was so obvious, but it worked on Matthias.
He told her not to make a scene, but his feet were already turning toward her.
Before leaving, he tossed me a box, looking like he wanted to say something but couldn't find the words.
I opened it. Inside was a necklace.
The diamond in the center was about the size of my pinky nail.
I snapped the box shut like it burned me. Just as I was about to chase after them, I saw Calla turn her head.
She casually showed off her hand, flashing a rock the size of a pigeon egg on her finger.
"I've been wearing the ring from when you proposed in front of my mom this whole time."
"Mom said we should visit her together next weekend."
I instinctively looked down at my own ring finger.
No ring. No tan line either.
They drove off, and I was still standing there like an idiot.
A coworker walked by and said hi.
"Finally gonna get rid of Calla Merrin, huh? Do you know how much trouble she's caused?"
I mumbled agreement, looking down at the papers I'd been clutching.
Calla had been assigned to Matthias's team as an intern.
Now that Matthias's authority had been transferred to me.
The first thing I did was terminate Calla's employment contract.
I thought about it for a moment, then sent Calla a message.
The next second, she sent back a photo.
That ring-covered hand holding a bouquet of roses, with the corner of a man's suit jacket barely visible.
I'd just typed back a question mark when Calla posted boldly in the company group chat.
"Don't understand why some people insist on trying to be a homewrecker."
"I made that announcement specifically to warn certain people, but they're still hanging around."
People started gossiping immediately, but I just laughed coldly.
If she wouldn't listen, then I didn't need to keep trying.
I blocked Calla.
She went quiet for a while, probably waiting for a response.
When my phone lit up again, it was Matthias who has been pissed off.
"Why did you block Calla? Can you stop being such a brat?"
When I didn't respond, he threatened me"Add her back, or I'll call you out in front of everyone."
Matthias was counting on me not wanting to cause a scene over something so petty.
But I just sent him a few lines.
"Didn't the doctor tell you, as my 'family,' that I lost five years of memory?"
"Don't worry, you'll be joining your precious Calla soon enough."
The next second, I texted my brother Noel Marchand.
"Your sister's getting screwed over at her own company. Time to come."
