Unlike me, Matthias was facing fired.
Over the past few weeks, he'd bent over backwards for Calla.
His unconditional enabling had turned her into a total nightmare.
Everyone used to look the other way out of respect for Matthias.
But now that everything was out in the open, all bets were off.
Matthias didn't just lose his job - he had to pay damages too.
His reputation was so trashed it seriously hurt the company's image and bottom line.
On my way out, I walked past him feeling absolutely triumphant.
Stopped right beside him and tossed that water-damaged marriage certificate into the trash.
The doctor said when I fell down those stairs, I was clutching that certificate for dear life.
Wouldn't let go no matter what.
Never imagined I was desperately protecting a fake.
Actually worked out though - saved me the headache of filing for divorce.
My family had no clue about me and Matthias getting "married."
Makes sense though - if he wouldn't even go public with our relationship, why would he admit to marriage?
Game over. Matthias looked completely drained.
Only time his eyes moved was when he spotted the certificate in the trash.
"I screwed up, I know that. But Calla and I... there was nothing real there. I divorced with her this morning."
"I had no idea about the other stuff. She kept using her mom's illness to guilt me into it."
Matthias's excuses left me completely cold.
I just walked over and looked down at him.
Gotta admit, Matthias was gorgeous.
Too bad good looks can't cover up being rotten to the core.
Seeing me pause, hope flickered in his eyes.
"I know you lost those years of memories, but that's okay. I can help you rememory everything..."
"Don't bother."
He wasn't even finished talking when I cut him off with a frown.
The thing I hate most in this world? Cheating scumbags who can't make up their minds.
Besides, I genuinely despise Matthias.
"Looking at you makes me physically sick. Those forgotten memories? Consider them trash I threw out."
I'd pieced together most of those missing years from our old text threads anyway.
Matthias was the one who confessed first, the one who pursued me behind the scenes.
My phone's notes app was full of entries about falling for him.
Started when he noticed I was on my period and awkwardly brought me pain meds.
Then came the gradual attraction, us going from rivals to... lovers.
The memories came back, but the feelings didn't follow.
Probably because Matthias's current image poisoned everything.
I couldn't picture him being tender or caring anymore.
Love and indifference really are worlds apart.
That necklace he gave me? Listed it on eBay that same day.
No point letting a gift go to waste when I could make bank off it.
Especially satisfying knowing I was profiting off someone I couldn't stand.
When I went back to pack up my desk, one of my coworkers came over all teary-eyed.
"Evelina, I'm gonna miss you so much. Can't you please stay?"
"Why is the company firing you? You're the victim here!"
Her sudden emotional outburst caught me totally off guard.
I fumbled my box and it crashed down onto my desk.
Took me a minute to recover, then I looked at her like she was crazy.
"Who told you I got fired?"
I raised an eyebrow and threw my arms out dramatically.
"Oh gosh!I gonna become the boss, baby!"
