I refused to give up, scanning every single little face in that room, but still couldn't find my daughter anywhere.
"Jesus Christ! She's still not getting it!"
Brain completely lost his cool and kicked me square in the gut.
Everything went black as I crashed forward, slamming into the cold linoleum floor.
He snarled down at me: "Stay the hell down, you sick piece of shit!"
Fighting through the pain and dizziness, I screamed with everything I had: "Where's my daughter? Where the hell is Flora? What did you do with her?"
Julia stood over me with her hands on her hips, then spat on the floor right next to my face: "Ugh! Disgusting!"
"Your daughter?"
She let out a nasty laugh: "We only have ONE student named Flora Steven in this whole place."
My blood turned to ice.
How was this possible?
"I picked this school myself! I watched my husband walk out the door with my daughter on registration day. Just because I wasn't there in person doesn't mean you can play me for a fool!"
"God, you just won't quit, will you?"
Julia shook her head, her voice dripping with mockery: "Keep up the act. Save it for the cops."
She rolled her eyes at me, then turned to the kids: "Everyone, take a good look at this face. This is what a kidnapper looks like!"
All the children stared at me with fear and suspicion.
I couldn't take this bullshit anymore, so I threw out my husband's name: "Hunter Steven! My husband's name is Hunter Steven. He's the one who brought my daughter here to register. Check your damn records!"
Julia froze for a second.
For a moment, I felt this tiny spark of hope. Maybe she was remembering something. Maybe there really was another kid with the same name as my daughter.
But then she crushed that hope completely.
"So you dug up Flora's dad's name too? How the hell did you screw up remembering what she looks like?"
She pulled that little girl into her arms, staring at me with ice-cold eyes: "This is the girl Mr. Steven brought in."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Julia crouched down and spoke softly to the girl: "Flora, sweetie, can you tell this scary lady what your daddy's name is?"
The girl pressed closer to Julia, her big eyes looking scared as she stared at me, then said crystal clear: "Hunter Steven."
Hunter Steven was my husband. So why the hell was this random kid calling him daddy?
"No! You're lying!"
I completely lost it, lunging toward the girl.
"Who ARE you? Who the hell are you? Why are you calling Hunter Steven your dad?"
The girl jumped back, clinging to Julia.
"That's enough!"
Julia screamed at me: "You're terrifying her! Security! Get this psycho out of here!"
"What the hell do you think you're doing?!"
A shrill voice cut through the air, followed by a sharp slap that sent my head snapping to the side. My cheek started swelling immediately.
The woman was perfectly put together—designer clothes, expensive handbag, looked like she was in her thirties. She was pointing at me, absolutely furious.
"How fucking dare you scare my daughter, you crazy bitch!"
"Who are you?" I snapped back, glaring at her.
"What gives you the right to hit me? What's your relationship with Hunter Steven? Fucking answer me!"
"What relationship?" The woman paused for just a second at my question.
Then her voice got even shriller: "Hunter Steven is my husband! I'm his wife—Alice Collins!"
Julia jumped right in to stir the pot: "Mrs. Steven, thank God you're here! This kidnapper didn't just stalk Flora—she knows your husband's name too. She's obviously been watching your family!"
Alice's eyes turned vicious: "You sick fucking freak! You disgusting piece of trash! You thought you could kidnap my daughter?"
The crowd around us exploded with chatter.
"Are kidnappers really this twisted now? Making up fake identities?"
"Someone call 911! Get this lunatic arrested!"
"She scared all these poor kids! People like this should be locked up forever!"
I screamed back: "I'm NOT a kidnapper! I came here to pick up my daughter! Hunter Steven is MY fucking husband!"
The woman looked at me like I'd just told the world's biggest joke, then pulled out her phone and dialed a number.
Someone picked up immediately.
"Honey!"
The woman who'd been acting like a total bitch suddenly sounded pathetic and helpless.
"You need to get to St. Ann's right now! There's this kidnapper here causing trouble outside Flora's classroom! She's claiming Flora is her daughter, and she... she attacked me! Called me a homewrecker!"
"She tried to grab Flora! Even security can't control her—she's completely insane! Please hurry, honey! Flora and I are so scared..."
After she hung up, the fake tears were still on her cheeks, but that helpless act disappeared instantly. She smirked at me:
"Hope you're ready, you crazy bitch. My husband's on his way. Can't wait to watch him destroy you."
