Hunter opened his mouth like he was about to explain something to me.
The woman sneered at me: "You hear that? My husband is a major CEO! If you know what's good for you, you'll get the hell out of here! Keep this shit up and you'll regret it!"
She clearly thought name-dropping "Clearwater Industries CEO" would scare me off.
Looking at her clueless ass, then at Hunter who looked like he wanted to disappear into thin air, I lost the last bit of hesitation I had.
Why the hell should I go easy on these people?
"You've really turned mooching into an art form, Hunter. I've got to give you credit."
I went straight for his biggest weakness.
"Using my money to play the big shot, keeping a mistress and her brat on the side... You're really living the high life off my dime."
The crowd absolutely lost their minds!
"What?! He's a mooch?"
"A kept man?"
"Using his wife's money to keep a side piece?!"
"Holy shit! This plot twist..."
"We almost had her arrested as a kidnapper! And this whole time..."
The massive revelation sent the crowd into complete chaos.
Every single eye was locked on Hunter.
Hunter looked like he wanted to evaporate on the spot, the veins in his temples pulsing.
Alice's smug expression crumbled instantly. She whipped around to stare at Hunter, her voice cracking: "Hunter?! What... what is she talking about? What does she mean, mooching?"
I couldn't be bothered to look at her anymore: "I told you to get Flora enrolled here for study. Instead, you let some random kid use my daughter's name and take her spot?"
"Mommy..."
Flora clung to my waist, and when she heard what I said, she looked up at me with tear-stained cheeks, whispering through her sobs:
"Daddy... Daddy took me to a really mean old lady's house. He said she was a retired teacher."
My heart clenched: "Old lady?"
Flora's lip trembled as fat tears rolled down her face, nodding hard: "Yeah, she's so mean. She yells at me all the time, and she... she hits me with a wooden stick... it hurts so bad..."
With trembling little hands, she slowly pushed up her sleeve.
When her arm was exposed, everyone around us gasped.
Flora's tiny pale arm was covered in angry red welts, some already turning purple—clear evidence of repeated beatings.
"Jesus Christ! Those marks..."
"She's just a little kid..."
"A retired teacher did this? What kind of sick fuck..."
I gently took my daughter's arm, my voice breaking: "Sweetie, why didn't you tell Mommy?"
Flora cried even harder, her shoulders shaking: "Daddy said not to. He said Mommy works really hard and is always busy, and I shouldn't bother you with little things. He said I only get hit because I'm naughty, and if I told you, it would mean I'm being a bad girl..."
Rage exploded in my head.
Hunter had actually manipulated my daughter into thinking she deserved abuse and shouldn't tell me about it.
"Hunter Steven!"
I spun around and slapped him so hard Hunter stumbled backward and almost fell over.
Alice pushed through the crowd to get to Hunter, not caring about her image anymore:
"Hunter! Is what she's saying true? What does she mean about mooching? And what your daughter said about the education spot... whose is it really?"
She was finally realizing that her precious Mrs. Steven status and her daughter's elite education might all be built on lies.
Hunter was still dazed from my slap, and being grilled by the Alice while being humiliated in public finally broke him.
He shoved the Alice's hands away and screamed at me:
"Are you fucking satisfied yet? Fine! I admit it! Yes, I got Flora enrolled here! So what? We're married—what's yours is mine! I can spend that money however I want! And..."
He seemed to think he'd found some justification, with this shameless, fuck-it-all attitude:
"And Alice is a single mom struggling to raise her kid! What's wrong with helping her out? What's wrong with spending some money on her? What's the big fucking deal? Did you really have to humiliate me in front of all these people?"
