His shameless bullshit made everyone go dead silent, with nothing but his heavy breathing and that strange kid's terrified crying filling the air.
I looked at him, then at Alice in her designer everything, and felt rage shooting from my feet straight to my brain.
Struggling financially? Helping her out?
I let out a bitter laugh, cutting off his pathetic excuses.
"Hunter, save your disgusting sob story..."
"Save it for court. I'm filing for divorce. Every penny that belongs to me and Flora—you won't see a fucking cent of it. I'm going to make sure you get thrown out on your ass with nothing."
"Divorce? Nothing?"
Hunter stared at me in disbelief.
After a few seconds, he snarled: "You... you can't just fucking decide that! You don't own the goddamn courts! What makes you think you can leave me with nothing?"
"What makes me think that?"
Watching him scramble like a cornered rat was almost funny: "How about the fact that you cheated during our marriage—with tons of evidence. How about you stealing marital assets to fund your mistress's lifestyle. How about you abusing your own daughter!"
My voice got louder with each accusation.
"Hunter, I'm hiring the best divorce attorney money can buy. Every single disgusting thing you've done over the years, I'm going to dig it all up and lay it out in front of the judge. Let's see how well you do then."
Hunter went completely quiet.
He knew me too well—knew I wasn't bluffing. When I said I'd do something, I fucking did it.
He frantically looked around for some last-ditch lifeline, then turned his attention to my daughter clinging to me.
His face instantly morphed into this fake loving-father expression, his voice deliberately soft and pitiful:
"Flora, sweetheart, Daddy's little princess. You... you need to help Daddy talk to Mommy. Daddy knows he messed up, Daddy's going to fix everything, Daddy's going to be the best daddy ever. We can be a happy family again, can't we? Flora's such a good girl..."
But his pathetic act only made Flora press closer to me.
My little girl's clear eyes weren't crying anymore. She pointed straight past me at the girl hiding at the edge of the crowd—the fake Flora.
"Daddy, why does she have my name too? Why do we have the same name?"
She looked up at Hunter: "Don't you want me as your daughter anymore? So you got yourself a new Flora? Just like you got yourself a new wife?"
Flora's words ripped away Hunter's last shred of pretense.
Hunter's eyes darted frantically between his real daughter and the imposter, like he was still trying to figure out which one was more useful to him.
He opened his mouth like he wanted to explain, but Flora didn't give him the chance.
She took a deep breath and buried her face against me: "Since you don't want me anymore, just go with her."
She paused, then looked at Hunter again with more seriousness than she ever show: "From now on, I only have Mommy."
Hunter was completely stunned.
He probably never imagined that his usually sweet, obedient daughter would cut him off so clearly when it mattered most.
Looking at his devastated expression, I thought he fucking deserved it.
The murmurs and disgusted looks from everyone around us were like a thousand tiny slaps to his face.
Finally, Hunter's face twisted with rage as he turned on Alice standing next to him.
"This is all your fucking fault! All because of YOU!"
