"Claire, Nolan's burning up with fever. Put Asher on the phone."
"Ha! That's fucking perfect then. Your son can just burn himself into a complete moron. Let me tell you something, Rosalind—I'm pregnant with Asher's baby. The kid in my belly is the real heir to Kemnis Group. Your son better turn into a drooling idiot."
Click.
Claire hung up on her.
Rosalind tried calling back, but it went straight to voicemail—as her son's fever climbed higher and higher, her whole body trembling and she immediately called Amy.
Amy's voice was shaky: "Ma'am, I can't help you. Mr. Kemnis gave strict orders—anyone who brings you and the young master even a glass of water gets fired immediately."
Amy hung up too.
Rosalind's eyes filled with pain, seeing her phone battery at five percent.
She put her son down and used her whole body to ram the wooden door. Once, twice, three times.
Her entire body was screaming in pain, but she didn't stop.
After hundreds of tries, the door finally broke open.
Her fingers hurt so bad she could barely move them, but she still picked up her son and ran outside.
"Nolan, hang in there, Mommy's getting you to the hospital right now."
Nolan was too feverish to even respond.
Rosalind's tears started falling. "Nolan, Mommy's getting us out of here, I promise."
Rosalind couldn't drive, and no one at the house would help her. In the middle of the night, she had no choice but to beg Asher.
She ran back into the house, carrying her son upstairs and bursting into Asher's room.
She found Asher taking care of Claire, his eyes flashed with panic for a second.
But his voice stayed cold: "Claire had a nightmare. She just came over here."
Rosalind saw the intimate scene between them and felt absolutely nothing.
"Asher, get our son to the hospital right now. He's burning up."
Asher had a tiny bit of conscience left. He came over and saw Nolan really was feverish, immediately started taking Nolan to the hospital.
But Claire started crying: "Rosalind, how can you be so evil? Hurting Nolan like this? You made Nolan sick just to make Asher feel sorry for you, didn't you?"
Hearing this bullshit, Asher's face went dark. He shoved Nolan back into Rosalind's arms.
"Rosalind, you're actually using our son to manipulate me. Since this is all your twisted game, you can walk your ass to the hospital."
Asher refused and Rosalind went ghost white.
"Asher, I'll divorce you. Please, just get Nolan to the hospital now. He's burning up—we can't fucking wait."
Asher looked shocked.
In his mind, Rosalind was never the weak one.
She was terrifyingly calm, even under him in bed—besides being shy, she was always composed.
Asher was about to say something.
But Claire started crying and clutching her stomach. "Asher, my stomach really hurts."
Asher looked at Claire, his hand freely touched Claire's flat belly.
"Claire, what's wrong?"
Rosalind grabbed Asher's hand.
"Asher, get Nolan to the hospital, please, I'm begging you. Whatever you want, I'll agree to it—divorce, money, I don't give a shit about any of it. I just want Nolan."
Hearing Rosalind mention divorce again, Asher went ballistic.
"I will never divorce you! Rosalind, you're my wife, and that's never gonna change."
But Asher picked up Claire and left.
"Since you handled those photos last time, you can handle our son's fever this time too."
Rosalind carried Nolan and chased after Asher's car.
"Asher, please, take our baby, take Nolan to the hospital!"
But all she got was Asher speeding away, not even slowing down for a second.
Rosalind watched Asher's heartless retreat and started laughing hysterically.
She was wrong, so fucking wrong.
Nolan, he doesn't deserve to be your father, and he doesn't deserve any of my research.
Rosalind immediately used the landline to call 911.
Asher, I begged you and you wouldn't even take our son to the hospital. You'll never get another chance.
Two days later
While she was taking care of her son for two days, she heard people gossiping.
"Did you guys know? Mr. Kemnis booked an entire hospital floor for his wife and treats her like she's made of gold."
"Yeah, Mr. Kemnis is so romantic. I heard they've been in love for ten years."
"But what about last time?"
"No clue. That woman was probably fake, just looked like Mrs. Kemnis. That's what the internet's saying."
"Yeah, Mr. Kemnis loves his wife so much, he'd never humiliate her in public like that. That must've been some fake trying to seduce him, and Mr. Kemnis got pissed."
Rosalind looked at her son, finally fever-free.
She had to get to the office and get her stuff back. She thought she knew what the password was.
But on the way there, a car slammed into her full speed.
She was lying on the ground in agony, blood slowly pooling around her.
She heard the ambulance sirens, heard the paramedics shouting.
Through her fog, she heard Asher's voice.
"Mr. Kemnis, are you really going to take Mrs. Kemnis's kidney for Miss Fleur?
