Asher was absolutely furious.
When he saw Claire show up on the rooftop, all fragile and pale, he immediately rushed over, took off his suit jacket and wrapped her up tight.
Claire looked at Asher with teary eyes.
"Asher..."
But Asher was radiating rage, veins bulging on his forehead, still not over Rosalind's escape.
Claire stood on her tiptoes to kiss him.
But Asher suddenly turned his head away. His dark eyes looked at Claire.
"Claire, there's company business. You need to rest at the hospital. I'm going to the office to handle things."
Asher let go and headed downstairs, completely forgotten to take Claire back down with him.
Claire stood on the rooftop, pale as a ghost, getting hit by the freezing wind.
That innocent and pitiful act from before? Now she just wiped her tears away.
"Rosalind, I'm gonna make damn sure Asher dumps you and your brat. You're gonna hand over that Mrs. Kemnis spot to me. Only me—the title of Asher's wife and Kemnis family queen belongs to me."
The second Asher got to the company, the top floor of Kemnis Group exploded.
The blast shook the entire building.
Asher immediately looked up at the roof and saw it was the research lab that had exploded.
The whole Kemnis Group building was blaring with fire alarms. People were running everywhere.
Asher's hands were shaking, his face ghost white—the research lab!
He frantically tried to run inside. His assistant immediately grabbed him.
"Mr. Kemnis, you can't go up there. Someone planted bombs—it's dangerous."
But Asher was beyond furious.
"Let me go! The research lab exploded. Everything in there is ten years of research—mine and Rosalind's work, all of it."
Kemnis Group had fifty-nine floors. All the elevators had shut down because of the fire.
Asher had to take the stairs.
He headed up and forced himself to climb all the way to the research lab.
But the fire was massive. He couldn't get in and was only choking from the smoke.
His assistant used all his strength to hold Asher back.
But Asher still wanted to charge in.
"Mr. Kemnis, everything's burned up. Even if you die in there, you can't save any of it."
Asher's steps froze, his eyes filled with pain. His mind flooded with images of Rosalind in the lab.
When he'd fall asleep from exhaustion, Rosalind would keep working on experiments.
When he'd get frustrated that some data wasn't meeting his standards, she'd calmly run the experiments over and over, telling him to rest, that she'd handle it, promising that when he woke up, all the data would be perfect.
When he'd wake up, Rosalind would still be working.
Her eyes would be exhausted, but she'd still give him a smile first.
"You're awake. Come look! Everything's ready."
Asher clutched his chest, suddenly coughing up blood. He frantically headed to the apartment downstairs—the place where he and she had lived for so long.
Asher ran down and pushed the door open.
The place was spotless—no trace of anything.
No furniture, not even Nolan's messy family drawings on the wall.
All of his and her stuff—except his things were piled in one corner, nothing else remained.
Even the curtains they'd picked out together had been ripped down.
Asher's face went white and he couldn't breathe. His hand pressed against his chest.
He kept gasping for air, every step he took hurt.
He went through every room. Not a single thing left.
Nothing of Rosalind's and Nolan's—not even a scrap of paper.
Asher let out an agonized roar.
"Ahhhh... Rosalind, you wouldn't do this, you wouldn't leave me, not over Claire, not over some fucking woman."
Asher frantically called Rosalind. But he got no response whatsoever—Rosalind had vanished without a trace.
The fire upstairs was getting worse, and he could hear fire trucks arriving.
Massive amounts of water were hitting the upper floors, even apartment downstairs started flooding too, slowly destroying his and Rosalind's home.
Asher watched it all happen, then he climbed back upstairs.
The research lab fire was finally out. That room reeked of smoke and burning.
Asher just stood there for a long time until the firefighters arrived, completely numb.
The firefighte saw no casualties and just said: "Mr. Kemnis, we can't save anything from inside there, but the good news is nobody at Kemnis Group got hurt. Fire's out."
Asher walked toward the research lab.
He saw the completely destroyed laboratory. How many days and nights had he and Rosalind spent there?
They'd made love in there, worked in there.
Their entire life was in there.
Asher suddenly wondered—how the hell did he and Rosalind end up like this?
Because of Claire?
Maybe, but maybe not.
He saw Claire's crying face, but his mind was flooded with Rosalind's face.
Deep down, he'd wanted Rosalind to cry.
In ten years, Rosalind had never shown weakness in front of him.
She was always so damn composed. Even when Rosalind was the one who liked him first.
She'd quietly stay by his side, giving him whatever he needed.
When he was hungry, Rosalind would notice and go get him food. Even when she barely had money, she'd buy him expensive meals.
When he fought with friends, she'd step in front of him, taking punches that were meant for him.
When he held her and took what he wanted, she clearly wasn't ready.
But she'd soften her body, let him do whatever he wanted.
That was the only time she cried.
Later, she stuck with him through starting the company, having kids.
She never shed another tear in front of him.
She was so strong it was almost cold, strong as fucking steel.
She did everything for him, but never once complained about being tired.
Later, he kept testing her more and more. He wanted Rosalind to need him.
But except for their son, Rosalind had no weaknesses.
He'd forgotten that he was also Rosalind's weakness.
When Claire showed up, he originally didn't want to take her in. After all, helping his buddy could've meant just giving her money and having someone else take care of her.
But he chose to bring Claire home.
Sure enough, when Claire entered their lives, Rosalind finally reacted.
The more intimate he got with Claire, the more Rosalind's expression changed.
She was jealous. Asher was thrilled.
Then things got out of control.
His attention really did get pulled away by Claire, his heart thrown off by Claire's crying.
And he forgot about Rosalind.
Forgot that the whole reason he brought Claire home was because of Rosalind.
The secretary stepped through the water on the floor and walked over.
"Mr. Kemnis, someone wants to see you."
Asher went downstairs to an office and met with a lawyer.
"Hello Mr. Kemnis, I'm Miss Lin's attorney. This is a divorce agreement and a document giving up custody of Nolan."
Asher looked at the line where Rosalind had already signed her name.
His fingers were trembling.
"Where the hell is she?"
