Cyril showed up at my place unannounced while Stephanie and I were hanging out.
"What do you want?" Stephanie asked bluntly, never one for small talk.
He shifted uncomfortably, his eyes darting to me before answering. "Stephanie...you know Serena and I go way back. Childhood sweethearts, first loves - even after all our breakups and makeups, that connection never really faded." He took a breath. "I messed up last time we fought. I want to do this right - confess properly and win her back. Think you two could help me out?"
In another lifetime, I might've laughed in his face. Told him straight up Serena loved me, that she'd never take him back, to give it up already.
But I knew better now. The truth was, Serena still carried a torch for him. They were endgame.
"Absolutely!" Stephanie beamed. "You guys have history, and let's be real - she's clearly not over you. This is gonna work!"
Cyril's face lit up with smug satisfaction, shooting me a look that screamed "I won" before he left. I brushed it off.
Two days later, Stephanie and Serena's friends had everything planned - a countryside getaway featuring a fire-dancing show. "Nothing brings out true feelings like adrenaline and chaos," they insisted.
The venue was packed when we arrived. Crowds aren't my thing, so I planned to hang back - until Cyril grabbed my arm and dragged me front and center.
As flames erupted into the night, Cyril jumped when sparks flew too close. Instinctively, he leaned into Serena, who just laughed and linked arms with him. "You're still scared of fire after all these years? Then why'd you come up here, dummy?"
"With you here, I'm not scared of anything," he murmured, so sincere it made my stomach turn.
The way she squeezed his hand brought back a brutal memory from my past life - early days with Serena when I'd done everything to make her feel cherished. Until that drunken phone call I overheard:
"It's like I married a controlling dad, not a husband," she'd slurred to Cyril. "But you...you give me space. You don't suffocate me."
A sudden commotion snapped me back - a loose dog sent the crowd scrambling. As I reached for Stephanie, someone shoved me hard. I tripped over the safety line, flames licking dangerously close.
Through the chaos, I saw someone running toward me. My heart leapt - was it Serena?
No.
She blew right past me to rescue Cyril.
Of course.
Stephanie helped me limp away, my ankle throbbing. "The confession setup's ready!" she gushed. "Come on, we can't miss this!"
She dragged me to the farmhouse inn where fairy lights twinkled in a heart-shaped tree, decorated with their old love letters and photos. Cyril stood beneath it, clutching pink roses, pouring his heart out.
Serena looked shell-shocked. The breeze carried their moment like some cosmic endorsement - this was how it was meant to be.
"Say yes!" the crowd chanted.
"Say yes to him!" I joined in.
Serena whirled on me, horrified. "Albion, have you lost it? I'm your girlfriend!"
Stephanie's jaw dropped. "Wait...she's your girlfriend?"
