"Don't worry, I'll be there in five," Serena said into her phone, her voice tight with urgency before ending the call.
Even with worry clouding her eyes, she still managed to toss me a parting shot.
"Albion, I've got something urgent to handle. When I'm done, we're finishing this conversation—but don't you dare bring up breaking up again. That's not happening."
She didn't wait for a response, just spun on her heel and hurried off.
I let it go, pushing the whole thing out of my mind as I headed to work like any other day.
Then, just before my shift ended, my mom called.
"I set you up on a blind date," she announced, no-nonsense. "I'm texting you the details. And don't even think about bailing."
"Got it, Mom. I'll mark it down," I said, chuckling at her persistence as I walked toward the office doors.
The second I stepped outside, I froze.
Stephanie and Serena were waiting right there.
I quickly hung up and walked over. "Sis, what are you doing here?"
"Just closed a deal nearby and figured we could grab dinner to celebrate," Stephanie said, flashing a grin.
The whole time, Serena's eyes burned into me, intense and unrelenting.
I ignored it. Didn't even glance her way as I slid into Stephanie's car.
Serena's face darkened, but she stayed silent.
Dinner started off normal—until Stephanie smirked and dropped the bomb.
"So, Mom roped you into a blind date, huh? You actually going?"
Serena's glass jerked in her hand. She whipped her head toward me. "What blind date?"
I kept my eyes on Stephanie. "Yep, all set. Thought I was kidding before?"
Serena let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh. "Albion, I'm still breathing. Who said you could go on a blind date?"
Stephanie's brow furrowed. "Uh… what does that have to do with you?"
"He's my boyfriend. So yeah, it has everything to do with me."
Her glare dared me to back her up.
I stayed silent.
Stephanie looked baffled. "Since when? How have I never heard about this?"
"Albion," Stephanie pressed, voice sharpening. "Is this true?"
I shook my head. "No. Serena and I aren't together."
Serena shot to her feet, face twisting in shock. "You can be pissed at me, fine! But how could you say that?"
Stephanie held up a hand. "Okay, if you two were really together, prove it. Show me something."
Serena froze.
There was nothing to show.
No photos—she'd always hated taking them. Once, I snapped a picture of our shadows, and she made me delete it on the spot.
On dates, she kept two meters between us like she was terrified of being seen.
Our texts? Mostly me talking to a brick wall.
Nothing to prove we'd ever been anything.
Stephanie rolled her eyes as Serena floundered.
"Look, I get it. Albion's a catch. But you might want to dial back the fantasies a notch."
