After a long day at the zoo, dinner time rolled around and the zoo was soon going to close. Five o'clock already? My phone must be wrong right? Unbelievable, everyday is passing by way too fast, even Leo is growing up way to fast and I'm loosing time... he is already five years old, my little baby boy. My little man. Can't he just stay young forever? It feels like seconds ago he was just starting to walk, talk, get potty trained and now sleeping in his own bed as a big boy? Next thing I know it, he'll be off to college— ah! Nope not even going to step over the youth boundary yet. He can stay as a kid forever and I'll be fine with it.
He's already out of his baby car seat and now I'm a booster seat, "Leo, where do you want to go for dinner?" Nathan asks as we pull out of the parking lot of the zoo, maybe I should've of warn him in advance that he only really likes to go to restaurants where there are fries for him.
"I want fries daddy! Please can we get fries! Please Daddy!" My son begs and Nathan just laughs at his statement. Although he had Nathan's looks, he had some personality traits from me.
"Okay bud, whatever you'd like," he then looks at me, "so, our son has inherit your abnormal addiction to fries? I remember you wanting them all the time when were were together..." he chuckles after reminding me of how I was when we were together. Ever since I was young I always liked fries, they were my all time favourite fried food.
"Well, when I was pregnant, I used to maybe... well I craved them all the time." I say kind of embarrassingly, just thinking of my pregnancy brings back the most amazing yet the worst memories ever. The best memories were hearing the first heart beats of my baby, finding out the gender, hearing that my baby was growing okay but sadly not as healthy as I'd liked.
"I wish I got to see that..." Nathan says and the car's atmosphere had refilled with tension, regret and awkwardness. We have come pretty far for just one day.
We arrived to a restaurant, heading inside with our little boy. "Hi, can we have a table for three?" I asked the waitress that seemed to be wearing clothes that revealed a little more skin then my liking.
"Of course," the woman says while eyeing my ex husband and leading us to a table, she placed our menus down asking us what we'd like to drink. After I've become a single parent, there wasn't really consumption of alcohol unless somebody was watching Leo but that never really happened.
The waitress left letting us to think of what we'd like to order, my son would want most likely a hamburger and fries, he was never really on that enjoyed complicated foods, yet anyways. "Mommy, can I have a cheeseburger?" Like I suspected, I called it.
"Sure baby, but I want you to eat the vegetables that comes on the side with it." I let him know.
My son huffs, "fine mommy, but I don't want the mushrooms."
"I know, I'll eat them for you. You only eat the broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, beans, and the french fries." I smile at him and he giggles.
"How did you know mommy?"
"You're my son. I know everything baby," I wink at him. We always come to this specific restaurant, well only because it was my favourite restaurant and I always order the same thing. Leo went back to colouring his train drawing, keeping himself quiet and occupied.
"Let me guess you want to get the salmon avocado zucchini salad with sweet potato fries on the side?"
"Y-you remember..?" I was in shock that he remembered my order after these five years, it seemed very improbable, it's just been way too long...
"Of course I do..." right when I was about to say something the lady reappeared.
"Are you guys ready to order?" Nathan nodded and continued to order for all of us, this women had impeccable timing, she knew exactly when to interrupt. After ordering she bent over the table so Nathan's view would be of her ass and turned to smile at him before leaving.
I rolled my eyes in annoyance, "jealous?" Nathan smirks in amusement.
"No way," I scoff but deep down the small bit that still cared was really angry. One downside of being married to Nathan, all girls are all over him. "I mean did you see the way she flaunt her breasts at you?"
"Okay, whatever you say," he chuckles.
"Mommy, can I watch the dinosaur show on your phone?" Leo asks with his puppy dog eyes that I always have difficulty refusing. He knows very well that I don't let him watch any television when eating or else he will take way too long. After many years of experience, I was finally getting the groove of everything.
I sigh, "fine, only this once, you can use your rhinoceroses headphones okay?" If he watched without headphones he would have to turn it on full blast because the restaurant itself was pretty loud.
Leo's eyes light up at the mention of his rhinoceros headphones, I have no idea why he likes dinosaurs so much though, it's always been one of his interest. He rushes to my purse to take the things out of it but I help him find the things he is looking for.
"When your food comes out I'm going to put it away though." I tell him before he continues to do what he is doing and he nods.
Right after Leo puts his headphones on, Nathan and me start having a nice chat. It's been so long since we've been out to dinner together, yet along with a son now too.
"Have you... been with anyone after we uhm, you know separated?" He asks awaiting the answer that may make him happy or sad with just one response. The answer for this was most likely always going to be the same because after I left it just hurt me so much to move on with someone while Nathan was still always on my mind. If I wasn't thinking about his smile, it would be of memories, if it wasn't about memories it would be of the joy he had whenever we were together. He was everywhere! He left every small piece that I'd like about him to reminisce about over the years.
"No, actually I haven't been with anyone except for you. What about you?" I guarantee you that he's probably been very sexually active, probably to get back at me for doing what he assumed I did. Nathan liked to get even when it comes to crossing him so people will be fair.
"No I haven't, I've been expanding my company a lot recently globally." Interesting, so I guess I am the one who just made an invalid assumption. God I'm such a hypocrite, at least he's been expanding his company globally.
"Interesting, that's great, I haven't been on those articles since the the scandal, it was just a waste of my time." After the tabloids had ruined my life throughout my pregnancy with Leo, I thought it was best to stay out of the spotlight from now on. If I get back together with Nathan, the paparazzi is probably going to be pick on me and be very invading. Every chance they got was only of knocking me down, which created their content.
"Can we talk about what's going to happen now that I am in Leo's life? I was thinking that you guys can come back to live with-"
"Woah woah woah. Who said anything about me moving back in with you? You can have Leo on the weekends, his school is here, I live here. I'm sorry but I'm not ready to move back in with you after what happened it still hurts a lot, I need a little more time to process before coming face-to-face with everyone else. Please just give me time, I don't care if you stay the night at my place that's fine but don't change everything yet I'm not ready. I'll drive up to for you to see Leo and you could drive here to see Leo, at least the drive is only an hour long."
"Okay, we will do it your way. I want you to know that you are more than welcome to stay at my place sometimes too, If we are going to be working things out." He says compromising for me.
