"Wake Up, Amanda. Nadia Needs More Blood."
Gabriel's voice sliced through the fog in my head, sharp and urgent. I pried my eyes open, wincing at the harsh fluorescent glare of the hospital room. My body felt like lead, every muscle protesting as I shifted. The bandages on my arms itched where the nurses had drawn blood earlier.
"What?" My voice came out ragged, barely audible.
"She hasn't woken up yet," Gabriel snapped, looming over me like a storm cloud. His tone left no room for argument. "Her condition's critical. She needs more."
More? My brain struggled to catch up. Fragments of the night flashed through my mind—my desperate escape from the apartment, the frantic phone call, the crash, the blood transfusion.
There'd been so many injured people, and the hospital's blood supply had run dry. So Gabriel had volunteered me—no, forced me—to donate for Nadia.
Nadia. Always Nadia.
"I can't," I rasped, my voice shaking. "I just gave. I—I don't have anything left."
Gabriel's face darkened. "You don't get a choice."
His fingers clamped around my arm, yanking me upright with brutal efficiency. Pain lanced through my muscles, and I bit back a whimper, swaying on unsteady legs.
"Gabriel," I gasped, stumbling as he dragged me toward the door. "Stop. Please. I can't do this again. I'm too weak."
For a heartbeat, I almost told him about the baby. But the words died in my throat.
He didn't even look back.
"You're fine. You'll be fine. Nadia needs you."
Nadia. Always Nadia.
I staggered as he hauled me into another room where two nurses stood waiting, their expressions uneasy.
"Sir," one of them started carefully, "she's already given a dangerous amount. Taking more could—"
"I don't care," Gabriel cut in, his voice like steel. "Do it."
The nurse hesitated, her eyes darting to me with silent apology. "Mr. Rocco, she's at risk of fainting—or worse. This could—"
"Just do it!" His shout ricocheted off the sterile walls.
"Gabriel!" I wrenched my arm free, though it took every ounce of strength I had left. My chest heaved as I glared at him. "Why are you doing this?"
His gaze turned icy. "She needs you."
"And what about what I need?" My voice cracked. "What about the fact that I'm your girlfriend? That I—"
"Enough." The word was a dismissal, a door slamming shut. He turned to the nurses. "Take the blood."
"Gabriel—"
"Now."
I flinched as the nurses stepped forward, their murmured apologies lost under the roar of my own pulse. The needle's sting barely registered—not compared to the suffocating weight of betrayal pressing down on me. Tears blurred my vision as the room tilted, my body too drained to fight anymore.
The last thing I saw before darkness swallowed me was Gabriel standing by the door, watching.
I woke to the steady beep of machines, my body heavy, my arms throbbing. Blinking against the dim light, I scanned the room, half-expecting—hoping—to see Gabriel slumped in the chair beside me, maybe even holding my hand.
But the seat was empty.
The disappointment twisted like a knife, but I refused to stay still. Swinging my legs over the edge, I shuffled into the hallway, the sharp scent of antiseptic burning my nose. My thoughts were a tangled mess of anger and hurt as I wandered aimlessly.
And then I found him.
Nadia's door was slightly ajar. My breath hitched as I froze in the hallway, peering inside.
Gabriel stood with his back to me. Nadia was propped up in bed, pale but awake, her fragile frame swallowed by a mountain of pillows.
They were hugging.
A jagged pain tore through my chest. Gabriel's arms were wrapped around her, his face buried in her hair as he whispered something I couldn't hear. Nadia's fingers clutched his shirt like she'd never let go.
I stepped inside, my legs barely holding me. They didn't notice me at first—too lost in each other.
When Gabriel finally looked up, his expression flickered—surprise, then something unreadable.
I forced a smile, even as my heart shattered all over again.
"What's going on here?"
