Right on cue, she showed up at the worst possible moment.
"How the hell did you find me here?" Ethan demanded, his shock written all over his face.
I couldn't help but smirk.
Lily had full access to Ethan's phone—always had. When he ordered takeout for me yesterday, she must've seen the address.
Meanwhile, I couldn't so much as glance at his phone without getting a lecture. The one time I asked to borrow it, he tore into me like I'd committed a crime.
"Forget about that. You need to go see the director," Lily chirped, linking her arm with Ethan's before flashing me that sickeningly sweet smile. "Emma, this show is a huge deal for Ethan. I'm sure you wouldn't want to stand in the way of his career, right?"
Her tone was so condescending it made my teeth ache.
It used to drive me up the wall, but now? I was just done.
"He can do whatever he wants," I said flatly. "Now move. I've got an interview to get to."
Lily's eyes glittered with amusement as she tugged at Ethan—but he didn't budge.
"I'm not doing the show," he said, firm.
"What?" The word slipped out before I could stop it.
Lily looked just as stunned. "Ethan, don't be stupid! This is your shot! You could be huge! If you back out now, your mom will lose it!"
"I'm not being stupid. My mind's made up," he said, shaking his head.
Then he locked eyes with me—that same intense look he used to give me back when we first started dating.
"My feelings for you haven't changed," he said.
But to me? That love had faded long ago.
Lily's face flushed scarlet. She stomped her foot like a petulant child. "Is Emma blackmailing you into quitting just to get you back? I knew she was trouble. She's just a—"
Crack.
Ethan's hand connected with her cheek before she could finish.
The slap left a bright red mark on her porcelain skin, and tears sprang to her eyes instantly.
"Ethan!" she shrieked. "You hit me—for her? After everything you've said about her? How she's loud, how she's beneath you?"
"I was wrong," he said, voice low, fists clenched. "And I won't let you talk about her like that."
I was floored.
This was the first time Ethan had ever stood up for me in front of Lily—the first time he'd ever gotten angry on my behalf.
Usually, I was the one left hurting.
"You—you jerk!" Lily sobbed before storming off.
I shrugged. "Go after her if you want. If something happens, guess who'll get blamed?"
"No need," Ethan said.
