"Not my circus, not my monkeys," I shot back, my voice dripping with frost. Ethan's mother's plastered-on smile cracked, her eyebrows shooting up in shock. Guess she wasn't expecting me to clap back like that.
Back in the day, I'd bend over backward for her—always the first to jump in and help whenever I visited. Meanwhile, Lily would be sprawled on the couch like a queen, while Ethan peeled fruit and hand-fed her snacks like some kind of devoted servant.
It stung. I'd watch, my chest tight, wishing just once he'd offer me the same treatment. But the one time I dared to ask, he just scoffed, "You got hands, don't you?"
I loved him so much back then that I swallowed every hurt, terrified he'd think I was being needy. So I bit my tongue, blinked back the tears, and never asked again.
"Emma!" Ethan's voice cut through the tension. "My mom came all the way here to apologize. What more do you want? I've explained myself a hundred times." His expression darkened, like he was the one being wronged.
Lily, ever the peacemaker (or so she pretended), raised her glass with a sickly-sweet smile. "Come on, Emma, Ethan and I are just friends. Let's have a drink and put this behind us."
"Upset?" I let out a dry laugh. "Why would I be upset? I'm just here to set the record straight." I turned to Ethan, my voice steady. "I gave you everything. But all you ever saw was Lily. So, I'm done. Consider this your free pass."
I pushed back my chair and stood.
Ethan's mom couldn't resist one last dig. "Emma, my son's about to blow up—scouted for a dating show. He'll be everywhere. You'll regret walking away." She tilted her chin up, like she'd just dropped some unbeatable trump card.
"Fame won't change a damn thing for me," I said, striding out without a backward glance.
Love has a funny way of making even the most ordinary person seem like the sun. But once that love fades? No amount of success can make them shine again.
"Emma—" Ethan caught up, grabbing my wrist, his voice shaking. "Please… don't go."
