The next morning, I woke up feeling like a brand new person. As I grabbed my phone, I spotted a message from Ethan that had come in an hour earlier.
[Emma.]
[Are you really not joining the show?]
[It's a dating show! We'd be the ultimate power couple—everyone would eat their hearts out!]
I nearly snorted out loud.
Power couple?
More like his emotional punching bag. What exactly was there to envy?
My fingers flew across the screen: [Stop bothering me. Anyone can go—except me.]
[You've changed.] came his clipped reply.
A smirk tugged at my lips.
Damn right I've changed. Staying the same would've meant a lifetime of misery.
I left him on read and spent the morning curled up with a book. Later, I scheduled a physical and enrolled in an online certification course for counseling psychology—my original college major and lifelong passion that Ethan and his mom had dismissed as "not a real career."
For the first time in years, excitement buzzed through me as I dove back into the field. I even called my parents to scout locations for a future practice back home.
The next few weeks blurred together—cramming study materials between rushed meals, barely surfacing for air until the final exam. When it was over, I celebrated with dinner at a nice bistro.
"This dating show is everything."
"Lily and Ethan are couple goals!"
"Who cares if it's staged? I ship them so hard!"
My head jerked up at the chatter. The restaurant TV showed Ethan and Lily center stage, hands clasped as they crooned some saccharine duet, gazing at each other like no one else existed.
Talk about perfect casting. Meanwhile, I'd been the awkward third wheel all along.
My phone lit up: [Emma, catch the show? Thoughts?]
[Caught some. You two look cozy.] I replied between bites.
[Not even a little jealous?]
I actually laughed aloud. [Why would I be? We've been over for months.]
Radio silence. No surprise there.
After paying the check, I meandered through the grocery aisles before heading home. As I turned onto my block, a shadowy figure by my building made me freeze.
Ethan. Black hoodie pulled low, baseball cap shielding his face like some B-list celebrity incognito.
"Emma!" He jogged toward me.
I crossed my arms. "Shouldn't you be hiding from TMZ? Wouldn't want your girlfriend finding out you're stalking your ex."
Disgust curled in my stomach. This was rich—playing devoted TV boyfriend by day, lurking outside my apartment by night.
"Emma, listen—"
"Save it. The show's fake? Shocking." I rolled my eyes. "Here's a script for you: Exit stage left."
His mouth opened, but I was already brushing past him, the lobby doors swallowing his sputtered protests.
Signs of Regret After Our Breakup? Please. Some performances deserved no encore.
