To my surprise, Ethan wasn't his usual frantic self. Instead, he just said, "Lily, I'm in the middle of something important."
"A cockroach isn't going to kill you. Just stay in your room—I'll swing by later."
His eyes stayed locked on me the whole time.
Weird.
Since when was I important enough to warrant that kind of attention?
Lily had always been his number one.
She used to rub it in my face, clinging to him and batting her eyelashes. "Ethan, am I the most important person in your life?"
"Of course," he'd answer instantly, like I wasn't even in the room.
We'd fought about it before. He'd show up with flowers, all apologies, but nothing ever changed.
"Ethan, you've never acted like this before!"
Lily's voice cracked through the phone, thick with tears—or at least, that's what it sounded like.
After she hung up, I caught a flicker of concern on Ethan's face.
I couldn't help but smirk. "Better hurry before she has a full-blown meltdown and does something stupid."
"No…" Ethan started, but then his phone buzzed again. His mom this time.
"Ethan, how could you abandon Lily like this? What if something happens to her? And imagine the scandal if word got out," she snapped.
"I…" He wavered, clearly torn.
"Just go!" she ordered.
After the call, Ethan turned to me. "Mind if I check on her?"
He never used to ask for my permission.
