Ethan's tone dripped with doubt. "We had plans today. Can I at least swing by your place?"
"Too late for that," I dismissed him with a wave of my hand.
The line went quiet before he finally spoke again. "Look, Emma... I'm sorry. Lily's been crying nonstop—I can't leave her alone right now."
"You never actually follow through anyway."
"Please," his voice took on a desperate edge, "just trust me on this."
"Save the apologies. I believe you." I couldn't resist throwing his old lines back at him. "You've known Lily forever. If she's sick, of course she needs you."
He used to deliver those same excuses with a smug grin, clearly getting a kick out of making me jealous.
Now the tables had turned—and the irony wasn't lost on me.
Another awkward silence hung between us before Ethan tried again, exhaling sharply. "Breakfast tomorrow? My treat—"
"Busy," I cut him off, ending the call.
I immediately pulled up my exam results online and broke into a grin—passed with flying colors.
Funny how things change. Ethan used to laugh whenever I got upset, thriving on the chaos.
Now? He was the one scrambling.
The whole thing would've been hilarious if it wasn't so pathetic.
Two days later, as I was heading home, my foot caught on the sidewalk. I pitched forward—
—only to be yanked back by a stranger's steadying grip.
"Thanks—"
My gratitude got cut short as Ethan materialized like some deranged jack-in-the-box, shoving the guy away. "Back off! Who the hell are you?" His pupils looked ready to ignite.
The stranger held up his hands. "Dude, chill—she was about to faceplant."
"Bullshit! You just wanted an excuse to touch her!" Ethan's fists balled up, veins popping in his neck.
"Enough!" I stepped between them, apologizing to the guy before sending him off. Whirling on Ethan, I hissed, "We're done. Why can't you get that through your skull?"
My voice cracked despite myself. "You already wrecked my life once. You don't get to barge in now acting possessive. Even if he was my new boyfriend, that's none of your damn business—just like you always said when the shoe was on the other foot!"
Hot tears betrayed me, spilling over when I least expected them.
Ethan's face crumpled. "Emma, I—I'm so sorry—"
"ETHAN!" A shrill voice shattered the moment. "There you are! The director's been tearing the set apart looking for you!"
