"Thank you," Athena said as she opened the image sent by Matthew.
"I'll find out who's responsible for this photo and the rumors. They'll face the consequences of their actions," Matthew said coolly.
Athena replied politely, "Alright, I'll wait for your update."
For her, the most important thing right now was to focus on getting the surgery done for Lucy. Everything else could be put aside for the time being.
As Athena examined the photo closely, she let out a soft gasp. "This was taken at Zoe's party. Unbelievable. I only spoke to Dr. Annie's team for a few seconds, and someone managed to snap a photo of it. They even spotted the text on my phone screen—what sharp eyes they must have."
"I'm so sorry, Mr. Graham. It was my carelessness that exposed your sister's condition and caused you so much trouble," Athena said apologetically.
"Miss Donovan, you don't need to worry, and you definitely shouldn't blame yourself," Matthew said with a steady, reassuring voice. "You haven't done anything wrong. The ones at fault are those scheming against both of us behind the scenes."
He paused briefly, then continued with a note of apology in his voice. "I've had issues with several people in the Graham family, who aren't exactly upstanding. You may become their next target. In that sense, I'm the one who has implicated you."
Matthew's candidness caught Athena by surprise. She quickly replied, "It's fine, I'm not afraid."
On the other end of the line, Matthew's lips curled into a gentle smile, a stark contrast to the vicious expression he had while torturing Archie earlier.
"Miss Donovan, I wanted to invite you out for a meal," he said sincerely. "But given the current situation, I think it's better to divert public attention and the Graham family's eyes elsewhere. I'll find a female companion to draw the focus away from you."
Athena frowned slightly. "Wouldn't that put her in danger?"
"Don't worry," Matthew replied with a hint of amusement in his voice. "That 'woman' is one of my subordinates—and a straight guy."
Athena chuckled. "Alright, I understand."
"Since the photo is from the Murray family's party, it will be easy to trace. Once I find out who's responsible, I'll hand it over to you," Matthew said.
"Thank you," Athena responded. "If there's anything you need from me, just let me know. I'll do everything I can to cooperate."
"Thank you for your cooperation." Matthew's voice was warm.
Then, there was an awkward silence.
Athena felt like she should say something more, but after thinking it over, she still couldn't find the right words. Matthew, on the other end, seemed to feel the same. He didn't hang up, but he wasn't speaking either.
Finally, Athena remembered something. "I heard Dr. Annie will be performing surgery on your sister soon. I have a strong feeling it will be successful."
"Thank you. I think so too." Matthew's voice grew softer, filled with genuine gratitude. "After my sister wakes up, I will make sure to thank you properly."
Something about the tone of his voice stirred Athena. She felt a faint, unexplainable tug at her heart. "Alright. When that day comes, I'll gladly accept it."
Another quiet pause hung between them, but this time it felt less awkward. Though they didn't know what else to say, neither of them wished to end the conversation.
The silence lasted for only a few seconds until Matthew saw Louis walking over. "Miss Donovan, I have some matters to attend to. I'll contact you soon," he said before pausing briefly. "Goodbye."
"Goodbye," Athena said softly.
After ending the call, Matthew turned to Louis.
Pushing his glasses up his nose, Louis held up a phone, the screen displaying an email. "This is Samuel's device. He's confessed everything, but he doesn't know much. He only forwarded the image to Archie after receiving it. The email address is one of those foreign, anonymous accounts that hackers use. No personal information is left behind," he reported.
"You're probably the only one who can trace the source," Louis added.
