After Athena entered the living room of the annex building, she heard voices coming from the main hall. It seemed that there was an eager discussion going on. After some thought, she walked over via the corridor to see what they were talking about.
Wesley's voice was a little unconvinced. "What's wrong with opening a restaurant in Bard Garden? I can pick you up every day and save you a lot of time. Also, our company is currently having discounted rentals and sales. Regardless of whether you rent or buy, you can get a discount.
"I can help you with the renovation too. When I'm free, I can go to the restaurant to help. What do you not like about that?"
Arthur sat cross-legged on the sofa. As he played games on his phone, he said, "I stayed in that area for years. I don't want to stay there any longer. Besides, that place is too far from home. I'd like to work somewhere closer to home with Mom.
"The consumption level in that area is relatively low too. If you open a restaurant there, you can't set the price high. The profits are limited. I don't want my mother's fine cooking to earn peanuts."
Maria also pointed out, "Mom's cooking is delicious. It's much better than the internet-famous restaurants and well-known restaurants I've been to. I hope Mom will take a more high-end route instead of relying on high sales volume to maintain profitability."
Claire said, "Arthur and I have been to many places lately. There are suitable shop nearby, but the rent is too expensive.
"Although Wesley has found a good job, home expenses have also increased. Moreover, Wesley's job hasn't stabilized yet. It's still too risky for us to rent such an expensive shop now. Why don't we open a small restaurant at Bard Garden first? After saving up, we can consider opening a restaurant nearby."
'Open a restaurant?' Athena's heart skipped a beat at that thought as she walked into the living room. "What kind of restaurant do you want to open, Mom? Maybe I can help."
Everyone waved at Athena. "You're here, Athena. Sit down. We only need your opinion now."
After Athena sat, Arthur moved the plate of fruits to her. "Athena, have some fruits. They're very fresh."
"Thanks," Athena smiled. She picked a slice of fruit with a fork and ate it slowly.
Claire sighed. "I want to have a lot of autonomy in the restaurant I open. I want to cook whatever I want and do whatever I want. I don't want to follow the customers' opinions all the time nor do I want to work long hours. I want time to stay at home and eat with family. But no restaurant operates so freely."
Athena asked curiously, "Mom, you seem to know a lot about opening restaurants?"
"Of course!" Wesley patted his wife's thigh and said proudly, "Athena, you don't know, but your mother's restaurant was very popular in the past. It was even selected as one of the best diners in Kitmore City. Many leaders and celebrities ate there."
Athena's interest was piqued. "Tell me about it, Dad."
Claire pinched her husband's thigh and said angrily, "It was many years ago. What's there to talk about?"
Wesley said, "Of course, there is. How can we not let the children know how capable you were in the past?" He turned to the children and started, "Your mother learned to cook when she was three years old..."
Arthur immediately shouted, "Dad, last time you said Mom started cooking when she was five."
Wesley glared at Arthur. "She learned to cook at the age of three and could cook on her own at the age of five. Is there a problem? Children from poor rural families, especially girls, learn to do housework when they were young. At four, they have to care for farm animals. At five, they have to care for their younger siblings. It's very normal."
Maria nodded vigorously. "Yeah, it's really like that."
