Daniel reminded her of her promise to update "The Case Chronicles of Detective Lockwood Holmes" in three days. It would be the fourth day after midnight today.
Athena's heart dropped.
If not for his reminder, she would have forgotten.
Athena clicked on the website publishing this novel. She was surprised that there had been over 100,000 new comments. There were more than 100,000 dollars in tips from readers in the past three days.
The novel's popularity was overwhelming. She knew she would be doomed if she did not keep her promise. Her readers would curse her badly.
She replied quickly to Daniel. She promised to stay up at night and complete the fifth chronicle for release by the following day.
Daniel's reply was almost instantaneous. He had sent a string of emoticons expressing his agreement and gratitude. He also asked whether she would continue to work on the sixth chronicle right after the fifth.
Athena was speechless. She was eighteen and just got out of high school. She wondered if Daniel thought of her as someone with life experience vast enough to have endless chronicles to write about.
Suddenly, her heart skipped a beat.
A thought occurred in her mind.
She looked up at Matthew. "I'm involved in an online detective novel based on real-life cases. It's quite popular. Would you mind if I wrote about your case? If possible, I'll write about our investigative methods, the process, and the clues we have discovered until now. It might catch the murderer's attention."
She paused before continuing. "Of course. I'll make the necessary adjustments to the case so that readers other than the killer won't guess I'm writing about your sister's case."
Matthew's eyes narrowed. "That's indeed a good idea. However, I won't like it if the murderer decides to target you. Therefore, let me handle this matter. You can sit back and enjoy the show."
"Do you think it's fair to me for you to make that decision after using me?" Athena leaned forward and protested by lightly punching the table with her fists. She continued, "I was the one who discovered the clues. I was also the one who came up with the idea. How could you remove me from the investigation without any hesitation?"
Matthew replied, "That was not my intention. I don't want you to take the risk."
"You're underestimating me." Athena shook her index finger and said seriously, "I'm not bragging, nor am I being arrogant. I know very well how capable I am. If the murderer finds me, I'm confident that I can deal with it."
Matthew smiled. "I'm not looking down on you. However, you've to remember you have a family."
Athena waved her hand. "Don't be afraid. I won't let anything happen to my family."
She explained seriously, "The murderer knows that would be complications if caution is not taken. I think the reason why Richard and you haven't been able to find the murderer is because the murderer stopped making any movements after believing that your sister has been successfully killed."
Athena smacked her lips and continued, "People like them don't want to get caught up in a sticky situation. They might want to silence me if I become the target. However, it'd do them no good if they involve the people around me."
Athena did not voice out her decision that she would protect her family at no cost if she sensed any movement from the murderer.
