Matthew turned his body sideways and strode forward. With ease, he passed between the two thugs. He raised his baton and swung it down, hitting the knee of a thug who was too tired to react.
Crack!
The thug fell to the ground, clutching his knee and screaming, "My knee, my knee is broken!"
In just three seconds, Matthew had crippled three people three times, shocking the thugs.
However, they were experienced after all. They quickly formed an encirclement and rushed up in batches. "Kill him!"
As soon as the thugs finished speaking, a kitchen knife flew over from behind the crowd and brushed past Matthew's head.
Blood flowed down from the top of Matthew's head, dyeing his handsome face half red.
He paused slightly and raised his hand to touch his face. Then, he looked at his blood-stained hand and smiled.
His bloodthirsty eyes looked even sharper and colder in the blood on his face.
"None of you can escape!" Matthew growled fiercely.
He let out a low laugh from his throat. Like an enraged beast, he raised the baton in his hand and rushed into the crowd.
It was past two in the morning.
Athena was suddenly woken up by the heat.
She was on the mountain, and there were trees everywhere. The windows were open, and the night wind blew in. Logically speaking, she should not be sweating from the heat.
After some thought, she sat up and turned on the fan, preparing to continue sleeping.
But at that moment, her phone rang, producing a melodious music.
The phone would only make a sound when someone important called her at night. Otherwise, it would be vibrating or silent.
She picked up her phone and saw that it was a call from Matthew.
At this time, when most people are in the deepest part of their sleep, why would Matthew be calling her instead of sleeping?
'Could it be because he's so preoccupied with thoughts of me that he can't sleep?' Athena wondered.
The thought made Athena feel even warmer, her heart racing wildly, almost as if it were expanding and contracting with every beat. Her face was so flushed it felt like it was steaming.
'Oh, what am I thinking? Maybe he's still working and wants to discuss some academic issues with me?' Athena quickly thought to herself.
She covered her face with one hand and pressed the answer button with the other trembling. She whispered, "Hello?"
On the other end of the line, there was a low and indistinct panting.
About five to six seconds later, Matthew's deep, hoarse, and tired voice entered her ears. "Miss Donovan, sorry to disturb you so late at night."
His voice made Athena's ears itch. It was numb and very hot.
Athena touched her burning ears and felt that her breathing had also become heavy and rapid. For a moment, she did not dare to speak, afraid that Matthew would recognize that something was wrong with her voice.
"But I need to tell you," Matthew's voice grew deeper and hoarser, like a bellows stoking a small fire, with the flames burning hotter and more desperately, trying to burst out and consume everything but being forcefully suppressed.
Matthew whispered intermittently, "I miss you... Very, very much... How wonderful it would be if you were here with me right now..."
His voice was broken and intermittent, as if it might stop at any moment.
Athena's face flushed, and her heart raced, feeling as if Matthew's voice might make her heart explode. Her mind was a whirlwind, and it felt like nothing existed except for his voice.
"Miss Donovan, can you hear me?" Matthew asked after a moment, his voice rough.
"Yes, I can hear you," Athena replied weakly.
Matthew's voice carried a soft chuckle. "It's good that you can hear me. Miss Donovan, it's 2:18 AM. You should get some good sleep. I won't disturb you any longer."
Hearing him about to hang up, Athena suddenly snapped back to awareness and realized something. She hurriedly asked, "Wait, are you sick? Is it serious?"
She was a top-notch doctor and should have noticed something was wrong with Matthew's voice earlier, but she had been so captivated by his words that she had not reacted immediately.
