"Miss Acevedo, you're being dramatic," Anabel chuckled. "I'm a law-abiding citizen. I wouldn't do something like that."
Instead of looking relieved, Madalyn pressed on with her questions. "You mean ruin my looks? Lock me up? Hire someone to take nude photos of me? Or leave me disabled?"
Anabel laughed lightly. "Miss Acevedo, your imagination is quite vivid. But it's not vivid enough."
She sipped her coffee slowly. "For example, you might imagine that Matthew loves you so much that the Graham and Powell families wouldn't dare to touch you, but they could go after the people around you. Of course, you could choose to live a solitary life, having nothing but Matthew.
"No family, no relatives, no friends, no colleagues, no servants, and so on."
"You can also picture everyone around you scheming against you, ensuring you never find peace, and so on."
Madalyn's expression hardened, and she pursed her lips, remaining silent.
Anabel poured out the cold coffee from Madalyn's cup and filled it with hot coffee. Then she asked nonchalantly, "Miss Acevedo, can you agree to my terms?"
Madalyn didn't think long before she replied bluntly, "Sure.
"But I have to ask, if I divorce Matthew after we get married or if I leave him after having his child, can those three conditions be nullified?"
Anabel smiled. "My conditions are non-negotiable."
Madalyn closed her eyes for a moment and then said calmly, "I understand. I'll adhere to those three conditions."
"You're indeed a clever one," Anabel smiled. "You can go now."
Without saying another word, Madalyn quickly left the coffee shop, got into her car, and drove away.
No one followed her.
Instead of returning to her previous apartment, she checked into a hotel, sleeping soundly until dawn.
Afterward, while taking a bath, she called Louis and recounted the details of her meeting with Anabel.
Once Louis finished listening, he ended the speakerphone call and turned to Matthew.
Matthew remained silent, walking to the window, hands casually tucked into his pockets, gazing down at the blue lake outside, deep in thought.
Louis sat on the sofa, quietly tapping away on his laptop, not interrupting Matthew's contemplation.
After about ten minutes, Louis felt it was time and set down his laptop, poured a glass of champagne, and handed it to Matthew, softly asking, "Have you thought about how to handle this?"
Matthew had been openly socializing with his "girlfriend" recently, not just to express his stance to the Graham and Powell families, but also to test their boundaries.
Only by understanding the families' limits and reactions could Matthew make a more accurate judgment.
Matthew slowly opened his eyes, took the champagne from Louis, and sipped it lightly.
Matthew asked, "What's the Donovan family up to these days?"
Louis responded as if he had always lived with the Donovan family. "Wesley is the general manager at Bard Property.
"It's been over a month since he took the position, and he's performing exceptionally well. He's professional, diligent, leads by example, gets involved at the grassroots level, empathizes with employees, and connects well with homeowners, merchants, construction workers, and partners. The entire company trusts him.
"Claire rented a 4,300 sq ft house on Hill Boulevard near Mid-Level Mountain Garden. She's renovating it to open a private dining restaurant, and Arthur is still helping his mom start a business.
"Maria has joined Miss Yonder's design studio as an intern in the jewelry design department.
"Jaden applied for a loan of 100 thousand dollars from a small bank to contract the village's wasteland and abandoned hills, but unfortunately, he was denied because of his ex-girlfriend's interference.
"The others are still busy outside and haven't come home yet."
Matthew lightly closed his eyes and slowly swirled his wine glass.
