The rebel leader said, "You must have explosives or grenades on you, right? They're afraid of those. If you blow up a couple, they'll scatter."
Matthew replied, "I don't trust you. First, tell me where the safe is, then I'll consider saving you."
As he spoke, he surveyed the surroundings.
There were 17 cannibals in total.
His AK-47 had 12 bullets, the Desert Eagle Semi-automatic pistol had 2, plus a knife and the "Guardian," which should be enough to fight back.
The rebel leader shouted, "No, you have to save me first, then I'll tell you..."
But they both underestimated one thing. One of the cannibals understood Maiselish.
The elaborately dressed tribal leader laughed, speaking clumsily in Maiselish, "You outsiders really like to lie."
Matthew and the rebel leader both felt a sinking sensation in their hearts, realizing things had gotten complicated.
The tribal leader pointed at Matthew, saying in Maiselish, "Raise your hands and throw over your backpack. No funny business, or we'll kill you right now."
Matthew raised his hands, bent down to grab his backpack, and tossed it to the tribal leader.
Upon receiving the backpack, the tribal leader rummaged through it, frowning. "Why is it empty?"
Matthew replied, "I'm very wealthy. If you let me go, I can give you everything you want."
"This is our territory. Outsiders must not come here," the tribal leader declared. "According to our tribe's rules, if an outsider enters, they must be eaten, or else we'll face divine punishment."
He then ordered, "Capture him."
Several cannibals sheathed their bows and spears and approached Matthew.
As they closed in, blocking his escape, Matthew suddenly shouted in Mandarin, "Guardian, attack the ones surrounding me."
"Understood!"
The "Guardian" sprang into action, shooting out several tranquilizer darts at the encircling cannibals.
Several fell to the ground.
Matthew swiftly rolled to the side, retrieving his AK-47 from behind the rock, and opened fire on the remaining cannibals.
He hit nearly every shot, a marksman at heart.
However, his injured fingers and wounds affected his accuracy.
He didn't strike any fatal blows, merely injuring a few.
The cannibals took cover behind trees, rocks, and other obstacles, occasionally shooting at him.
Matthew returned fire when he could.
Before long, his AK-47 was out of bullets.
The "Guardian" had exhausted its tranquilizer darts, losing its offensive capability.
Matthew pulled out the Desert Eagle Semi-automatic pistol, knife, and a vial of supplies, seeking refuge behind a large tree.
The standoff continued.
The tribal leader shouted in Maiselish, "Your gun can't hold many bullets. We can wait until you run out before capturing you."
He then pulled the rebel leader in front of him as a shield, slowly advancing toward Matthew.
The rebel leader's expression changed. "Matthew, only I know where the safe is hidden. If I die, you won't get anything."
The tribal leader laughed, "We just need to search near where we caught you, and we'll surely find it."
Matthew peeked out, decisively pulling the trigger and shooting the rebel leader dead.
He immediately turned and ran.
The "Guardian" deployed its wings and followed closely behind him.
"Chase him!" The tribal leader abandoned the rebel leader and led the pursuit after Matthew.
One hour later, Matthew found himself at a lake 100 feet wide, with no escape in sight.
The "Guardian" warned, "There are crocodiles in the water. As long as you can swim faster than them, they won't harm you."
Matthew fell silent.
Perhaps he could grab one of the cannibals, injure him, and toss him into the lake to distract the crocodiles.
He turned to look back, and his heart sank again.
The number of cannibals had increased, now over twenty.
Matthew was injured, and he wondered if he could capture one cannibal and jump into the lake to swim to the other side.
But he had to.
He promised to meet Athena for dinner.
