Just then, the "Guardian" alerted, "Three o'clock! Incoming attack!"
Without thinking, Matthew raised his hand and turned, firing in that direction.
One of the attackers fell.
But Matthew was out of bullets.
He pulled out a round, black object from his pocket, shouting, "Come any closer, and I'll blow you all up!"
The cannibals froze, nervously watching him.
The tribal leader yelled, "Everyone spread out! Use arrows and spears against him!"
Matthew instantly threw the object at the leader, then charged toward the lake, ready to jump in.
At that moment, he heard a "buzzing" sound, rapidly approaching.
Matthew recognized it as the sound of a helicopter flying fast.
He stopped in his tracks, not looking up, but instead aimed his empty pistol at the cannibals, pretending it was still capable of firing.
The cannibals had initially been startled by the fake grenade he threw.
Now, they were also stunned by the approaching helicopter.
They backed away, fearfully watching it.
Matthew still didn't look up but asked, "Guardian, can you see who's coming?"
If it was the government troops, he might not be saved.
The "Guardian" responded with a cat-like sound, "It has the national flag. It should be our people."
Matthew smiled slightly.
In his most desperate moment, he had actually received reinforcements.
It felt miraculous.
But he still didn't look up. Instead, Matthew dashed into the nearby jungle.
Seeing the arrival of his rescue, the cannibals would surely take the last chance to kill him. Matthew couldn't afford to wait for the rescue to land.
The tribal leader shouted, "He has no explosives. He's lying to us."
"Kill him quickly. We mustn't let him escape!" the cannibals shouted wildly, chasing after Matthew, hurling bows, spears, and sharp stones.
Without the protection of his backpack and body armor, Matthew was struck by an arrow and fell to the ground.
The cannibals rushed in, preparing to deal the final blow.
So focused on eliminating the intruder, they didn't notice that the helicopter was already flying low, its door swung open.
A mysterious figure appeared at the door, holding a submachine gun and firing wildly at them.
Several cannibals were hit and fell dead.
The others screamed in terror, scattering in every direction.
The tribal leader hid behind a tree, waving his arms and shouting something.
Matthew understood his words. "That 'metal bird' can only land on flat ground. It can't stop here. Don't be afraid. Just hide."
Struggling, Matthew climbed to his feet, leaned against a tree, squinting up at the helicopter.
'Who was coming?' he thought.
Then he saw a figure leaping from the helicopter, one hand holding onto a rope, the other clutching a submachine gun, shooting down at the cannibals as they tried to escape.
The person looked so cool.
Not only was it brave, but it was also incredibly skilled.
But Matthew found the figure slender.
When the person landed, Matthew was shocked. "Miss Donovan?"
Though she was dressed in camouflage and body armor, wearing a helmet and carrying several rounds of ammunition and a submachine gun, he recognized Athena instantly.
Matthew could hardly believe his eyes.
Then he narrowed his eyes, revealing a satisfied, joyful, and gentle smile.
After pushing back the cannibals with her submachine gun, Athena ran to Matthew's side, crouched down, and gently touched his face, saying, "Mr. Graham, are you Okay?"
Matthew smiled at her, "Miss Donovan, I feel better than ever right now. And I want to tell you something."
Athena looked pleased. "What is it?"
Matthew said, "Miss Donovan, you are my heroine."
