It was a bit cold in January. The person who stayed in the house seemed to be poor, as his belongings were rather cheap. Therefore, Athena assumed he would come back at night.
As she expected, at around eight o'clock in the evening, the door opened.
Athena stood up and quietly hid behind the bathroom door in the dark.
The door opened, and someone entered with heavy footsteps and turned on the light of the living room. He then paused by the door to change his shoes.
Athena peeked out, cautiously showing half of her head to get a better look at the person. He was dressed in a down jacket with a hood, and his face was covered by a mask and glasses.
Athena had planned to close the door and catch him as soon as he walked in. However, something unexpected happened. After changing his shoes, and just when the man was about to remove his mask, his gaze landed on the coffee table.
Athena thought to herself, "Oh no!" Her laptop was on the coffee table, and the man must have realized someone was in the room. In an instant, she bolted out.
However, the man was quick. He rushed downstairs just as Athena burst out of the bathroom.
Athena chased after him, and they both raced down the six-story building in just a few seconds, as if they were taking the elevator.
Athena thought to herself as she ran. 'He is a fast runner. He's either trained or experienced.'
The iron gate on the first floor was closed. When they reached the ground level, the man slowed down briefly to open the metal door.
As soon as the iron door swung open, Athena leaped up from the steps and lunged forward. She landed behind the man and tackled him.
The man grunted and turned his head, his cold, sinister eyes piercing into Athena's. Their gazes locked, but Athena showed no fear. With a swift motion, she raised her small hand and yanked the mask off his face.
Then, she was completely stunned. 'Could the other party be... Could it be... But... how was this possible?'
When the man saw her face clearly, he was momentarily stunned. His eyes softened, filled with excitement and joy, and there was even a hint of moisture as if the fierce gaze he had just shown didn't belong to him. But within seconds, that expression shifted to one of panic and nervousness, as if he had been caught doing something wrong by an adult.
He shoved Athena aside, quickly got to his feet, and sprinted forward with all his strength. Athena quickly regained her composure and raced after him.
She was just as fast as him and should be able to catch up soon. However, he was cunning and darted straight into the dark area where there were no streetlights.
Athena realized she couldn't catch him this way, so she quickly came up with an idea. Suddenly, she collided with a tree and fell to the ground. Covering her forehead with both hands, she cried softly, "Boohoo, it hurts. My head hurts, and my chin is bleeding... Can someone help me? Boohoo..."
The man, who had already hidden in the shadows, froze and slowly turned around. He watched as she got up unsteadily, only to fall again. Involuntarily, he took a step toward her, reaching out his hands as if to help. However, when he reached the boundary where light met darkness, he hesitated and stopped.
A gust of cold wind blew past. Athena trembled and cried even harder. "Can someone help me? My head is so dizzy. Boohoo..."
The area had very few residents, and on this winter night, every home had its doors and windows tightly shut. No one could hear her cries for help.
The man gritted his teeth, pulled out a new mask, and put it on. He hurried over and crouched down to support her. "Where are you hurt? I'll take you to the clinic right now..."
But before he could say anything, Athena grabbed his arm. She looked up at him with a smile and said, "Hey, I caught you."
Surprise flickered in the man's eyes, quickly followed by nervousness. He glanced left and right, as if contemplating a hasty escape once more.
Athena, sensing his uncertainty, called out, "If you dare to run, I'll lie here all night! If anything happens to me, it'll be your fault!"
