Zayn had just returned home at 10 p.m. when he received a call from an unknown number.
He picked up the call politely. "Hello, who is this?"
A gentle and capable woman's voice sounded softly. "Zayn, this is Elsie."
Zayn frowned slightly. Before he could speak, Elsie said quickly and clearly, "I know you remember me but don't want to see me. I don't have the face to see you, either. I called you only to tell you the truth back then."
Zayn said calmly, "Go ahead."
Elsie told a sad story in a slightly sad tone. "My father was a violent man. Every time he was drunk, he would beat my mother. Every time my mother wanted a divorce, my father would say he would beat her to death if she dared to get a divorce.
"My mother asked her parents for help. Instead of helping her, my mother's father, brother, and younger brother even called her useless.
"My mother was deceived and abandoned by her first love in school. After graduation, her family lied about my father being kind and honest and said she wouldn't lose out if she married him, so my mother believed it.
"Because of these things, my mother hated men to the core. She even taught me not to believe in men or love.
"It wasn't until I was in junior high school that my father fell down the stairs after drinking too much, causing his legs to be crippled. Only then was my mother able to get a divorce. She brought me to rent a small apartment and worked hard to raise me alone."
At this point, Elsie paused slightly and tried to calm her emotions. And Zayn continued to listen calmly without saying a word.
Elsie even suspected that Zayn was not listening. However, those words had been buried in her heart for a long time. She had to say them out loud.
She continued, "During the summer vacation before my second year in high school, I got badgered by Ben. My grades plummeted, and my mother was furious.
"Shortly after school started, my mother found my journal under my pillow. It was full of admiration and yearning for a boy, Z. Don.
"He was handsome, but he didn't know it. He was good but not arrogant.
"He didn't like to talk, but he was the most active, focused, and responsible student.
"During the PE class, if a classmate got injured or felt unwell, he would tell the teacher and take the classmate to the medical center.
"There was trash on the floor of the classroom. He always quietly cleaned or picked it up and threw it into the dustbin downstairs.
"He used to help the teacher clean the blackboard, bring water, and get homework.
"No matter how much I wrote in my diary, I couldn't write everything good about him."
Elsie smiled as she spoke, crying at the same time. "My mother thought that I was dating Z. Don and that it was Z. Don's fault that my grades were falling.
"She burned the diary to my face and interrogated me about who Z. Don was. I didn't tell her. After that, my mother confirmed that you were Z. Don in my diary and hated you.
"Later, Ben's family sent someone to contact my mother and said that as long as I changed my mind, the four families would compensate us with a huge sum of money..."
Elsie told everything about how the four families had bribed her mother.
Then, she sobbed softly. "My mother said she would kill herself if I disagreed.
"She wasn't trying to scare me. She'd cut her wrists, climbed over the roof, and tried to gas herself when my father beat her. I was terrified she'd die. I couldn't bear the pressure and compromised..."
At this point, she was sobbing uncontrollably. But Zayn still did not react.
Elsie did not cry for long. She quickly regained her composure. "That's the entire truth.
"A mistake is a mistake. No matter what I say, it's still my fault. I won't ask for your forgiveness.
"If my mother comes after you again, you can go public with everything I said. It'll clear your name."
When Zayn heard that, he said calmly, "I didn't record it. What you said won't be used as evidence.
"But my lawyer is gathering evidence and looking for witnesses. All I want is a fair and impartial trial."
Elsie was stunned again.
After a while, she smiled and said with tears, "Zayn, you're the most upright and reliable man I've ever met. If possible, I want to give you the diary I wrote in high school and let you see how much I admired you back then."
Zayn remained calm. "That's all. Bye." He hung up.
In the darkness, Elsie, barefoot, curled up in the corner of the living room. She hugged her knees with one hand and held her phone with the other, letting her tears drip onto the floor.
