"Josie, be a good girl. Let me give you some water, Okay?" Claire gently pressed the bottle to Josie's lips, softly humming a lullaby she used to sing to her. "Twinkle, twinkle, little star..."
Josie obediently opened her mouth and took small sips of water.
After finishing the bottle, she let out a tiny yawn and, leaning her head on Claire's shoulder, fell asleep.
Everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief.
"I added some throat-soothing medicine and a mild sedative to the water," Athena said. "It should help her sleep for five or six hours."
"I'll carry her," Arthur said, reaching out to take Josie from Claire.
But Josie instinctively tightened her grip around Claire's neck, her little face scrunching up as if rejecting the idea of being taken away from Claire's embrace.
"It's alright. I'll carry her," Claire said, looking at the sky. "Josie's emotion is unstable. I can't feel at ease. I'll head home now to take care of her."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Given Josie's condition, Claire was the only one who could keep her calm.
Meanwhile, back at the hotel, Paityn, devastated, was being led back by Saanvi and the driver.
"You're useless," Saanvi scolded her. "Your own child was right in front of you, and you couldn't even take her. No wonder your daughter doesn't want to recognize you."
Paityn remained silent, her face ashen, her eyes tightly shut.
In her mind, Paityn replayed Alina's terrified look and piercing scream upon learning that Paityn was her mother, as if Paityn were some monster that would devour her.
Alina had even thrown away her Hello Kitty as if severing all ties with Paityn.
"Alina didn't want me," Paityn thought.
The driver couldn't bear it any longer and whispered, "Ms. Grant, Paityn looks unwell. She might get sick. Maybe she should rest."
Saanvi, exhausted from scolding, coldly replied, "Take her to her room. Let her rest and come to her senses."
They had booked a suite with two bedrooms, one for each.
The driver helped Paityn to her bedroom, tucked her in with a light blanket, and quietly left, closing the door behind him.
Paityn, who hadn't eaten all day, was physically and emotionally drained. She quickly fell into a deep sleep.
In her dreams, she saw Alina again, so small and delicate, her voice soft and sweet as she called out, "Mommy... Mommy..." And she stretched her chubby arms toward Paityn, toddling over on wobbly legs.
Tears streamed down Paityn's face, soaking her pillow.
After a long while, hunger woke Paityn up. She opened her eyes to find the room in total darkness.
It was already night, though she had no idea what time it was.
Struggling to get up, Paityn leaned against the wall and wobbled toward the door, hoping to find something to eat in the living room.
Just as she cracked the door open, she heard Konnor's voice. "One of the servants let slip about our plans to reclaim Josie, and Lorelai overheard. She threw a huge tantrum, refused to eat, and even called Alberto.
"Alberto called me to ask what was going on. I told him it was all a misunderstanding and that we had no intention of reclaiming Josie. Only then did he let it go.
"I think we should drop the idea since both kids clearly don't want it."
Paityn's heart skipped a beat.
She thought, 'What is Konnor doing here? Wasn't he supposed to be overseeing admissions in Dichester?'
Terrified of both Saanvi and Konnor, Paityn didn't dare step out. She stood frozen at the door, straining to hear what Konnor had to say next.
