Gavin called her to ask for her exact location and informed her, "Grandpa said he never gave Joel the title deed. It must have been Isla, who stole it last night while he was asleep. He's been trying to call her all day, but she won't pick up. He's so stressed he's about to fall ill.
"He, my father, and my wife are on their way to the housing office now. Under no circumstances can you let Joel transfer the property!"
Maria replied, "It's almost our turn, but I'll do my best to stall."
Gavin was pleased, saying, "If you handle this well, I'll treat you like my own sister."
Maria gave a slight smile, hung up, and went back to scrolling on her phone.
A few minutes later, she received a new message: [Maria. Ronan and his family have arrived.]
Maria replied: [Got it, thanks.]
Then, she sent a quick message to the temporary group chat.
Immediately, the "insiders" in front of Joel left, allowing Joel and his wife to move up to the second spot in line. Delighted, they couldn't contain their excitement. "Our luck's amazing! We'll make it before closing time."
Two minutes later, it was finally Joel and his wife's turn.
Beaming, they eagerly handed the title deed, ID cards, documents, and completed paperwork to the clerk.
Just as the clerk reached for the documents, Gavin's wife suddenly burst onto the scene, forcefully snatching the documents and clutching them tightly to her chest. She shouted angrily, "Joel, this house belongs to us!
"You had the nerve to trick Maria and even steal the title deed. Shameless!"
Behind her were Ronan and Quentin, both catching their breath.
Ronan sighed. "Joel, you tricked us into helping with your kid, only to steal our title deed. This isn't right."
Quentin shook his head, adding, "We all agreed the house would go to Gavin. How could you go behind our backs, change the decision, and sneak over here to process the transfer?"
Exposed, Joel and his wife felt no remorse. Instead, they looked at the elders with resentment.
Joel angrily retorted, "The house belongs to Aunt Claire's family, so she gets the final say! She said she would give the house to us, so it's ours! Who are you to speak on her behalf?"
Isla joined in, snapping, "You had the numbers and beat us so badly. Did we have a choice but to go along? But we've never respected any of you."
Gavin's wife shot back, "If Aunt Claire wanted to give the house to her family, it would go to her parents, and we're the ones looking after Ronan and Violet. Their house is supposed to be inherited by their sons and eldest grandson. This house belongs to us, no question about it!"
She pointed at Joel, accusing, "Ronan's, Violet's, and our identity documents disappeared. Did you steal them to prevent us from transferring the ownership?"
With the inefficient procedures in their small town, new identity documents might take a long time.
On top of that, Ronan and Violet would have to be there in person to get the new identity documents, which would be an endless hassle. It would take a long time to get the relocation house at this rate.
Just the thought of it all made her resent Joel's family even more.
Their argument grew so intense that the entire property office was alerted. Onlookers were watching, whispering, and speculating, while security and staff tried to step in and calm things down.
But with the life-changing relocation house on the line, no one in the Stevens family would back down just for the sake of appearances.
Seeing that closing time was fast approaching, Joel grew even more desperate and furious, pointing at Gavin's wife, shouting, "Hand over the property deed and the identity documents, or else!"
Realizing her own family's identity documents were missing, meaning they couldn't process the transfer anytime soon, Gavin's wife made a bold move. She grabbed Joel's identity documents and tore them up, sneering. "You took our identity documents? I'll tear up yours! There's no way you're taking our house!"
Seeing their plans crumble, Joel and Isla lost all sense of control.
Joel shouted, "You bitch! You accuse me of stealing your identity documents and you even rip ours to shreds. Are you insane?"
Furious, Joel pushed past the security guards holding him back, stormed over, knocked Gavin's wife to the ground, and kicked her twice with all his strength.
