Compared to Sofia's full-blown meltdown, Camila remained calm as ever.
Camila scoffed, "Just so you know—it was me who ended it. I dumped your son."
Ignoring the fury burning in Sofia's eyes, Camila kept going. "And don't worry. I'm not gonna cling to him. A man like him, who can't keep it in his pants, isn't exactly a prize.
"Oh, and one more thing—watch your mouth. If you talk trash like that again, I will hit you."
With that, Camila brushed past her, completely unfazed by Sofia's seething glare, and walked away.
Sofia stood frozen, her eyes widening, a flicker of disbelief flashing across her face. She thought, 'Was that really Camila just now? Did she get possessed or something? How dare she talk to me like that? She must have a death wish.'
The more she thought about it, the more her blood boiled. Hands trembling with rage, she snatched her phone from her purse and called Noel, yelling, "What the hell is wrong with Camila? She actually had the nerve to talk back to me.
"Noel, I don't care how you feel about her—break up with her immediately, or I swear I'll kill myself right in front of you."
Noel was in the middle of a meeting when his mother's call came through. The fact that she was calling at all already surprised him a little.
But when he heard what she had to say, he paused. "You ran into her today?" he asked, puzzled.
Sofia snapped, "What do you think? You think I'm this pissed for fun? That little tramp is getting way too full of herself now that your grandmother's got her back. Dump her now, or don't bother coming home."
Noel's brows furrowed. He walked out of the conference room to a quieter spot and tried to calm her down. "Don't get upset. I'll talk to her later."
He ended the call and rubbed his temples, thinking, 'Camila's getting bolder by the day. She knows Mom doesn't like her, and she still chose to push her buttons? Mom already has a problem with her, and now Camila's still making a scene.
'What, does she not want to marry into my family anymore? Or is she getting cocky because Grandma adores her so much?'
Sofia's expression eased a little after hearing his reassurance, but she couldn't resist complaining, "I honestly don't know what your grandmother sees in her. How the hell is that crude, low-born, tasteless girl good enough for you?"
Noel frowned slightly at his mother's harsh words about Camila, but didn't say much. He just muttered, "I'll bring her by to apologize later."
Sofia scoffed coldly, "Don't bother. Just the sight of her face pisses me off."
Just as Sofia was still ranting on the phone, Noel was about to hang up when she added, "Oh, by the way, don't forget lunch with Mr. Walker's daughter today. And don't you dare show up with that deadpan face—try to leave a good impression."
Noel muttered an absent "Okay" and ended the call. These matchmaking setups didn't faze him anymore—he'd heard it all before. By now, dealing with them had become second nature.
Right after, he sent the lunch address and time to Luke, tagging on a text: [You go instead.]
Luke: [What?]
Noel: [My mom set me up on a blind date. Just go have the lunch for me and play nice.]
Luke responded with a smug meme and a reply: [Gotcha. You're trying to keep Shelly from getting the wrong idea, huh? Don't worry, I'll handle it like a pro.]
Noel frowned, not quite sure what Shirley had to do with it—he just didn't feel like going. But he didn't bother explaining. He let it slide with a simple response and backed out of the chat.
His thumb drifted across the screen until it landed on Camila's contact. Thinking back to his mom's angry call, his frown deepened.
