The silver-haired hospital director stepped out of the conference room with a puzzled look. "Calvin, what's going on with Dr. Hemming?"
Calvin Parker, Johnathon's assistant, looked just as confused. "No idea. It happened so fast."
The director couldn't help but speculate, "Did something happen with his family?"
Calvin fell silent. During the five years he'd worked with Johnathon, he could barely recall him ever talking to his family. Johnathon kept to himself, lived simply, and always seemed like someone from a completely different world.
Meanwhile, Camila sat on a bench in the hospital, zoning out. When she finally checked the time, she picked up her bag and stood to leave.
Then a husky, familiar voice reached her. "Ms. Bateman."
She was taken aback. For a second, the wind seemed to blur her vision. He looked almost too good to be real in his white coat, like he had walked straight out of a dream. Camila felt herself momentarily stunned.
But she quickly snapped out of it, smiling in surprise, "Mr. Hemming, hi. So you work at Emberwick Medical Center?"
He stepped closer, glancing down at her. "Yeah. Small world, huh?"
His eyes, brooding and enchanting, swept over her with polite concern. "Not feeling well?"
"Yes." She nodded. But then she quickly added, "But also no."
"What do you mean?" Johnathon asked.
"I came to get my hand checked out," Camila explained. "But there were too many people. The waitlist is forever."
He raised a brow. "You trying to see Dr. Quilter?"
Camila looked up, surprised. "How'd you know?"
"I could smell the herbal medicine on you," he said matter-of-factly. "So I figured you must've stopped by the Traditional Medicine Center. And here, the busiest and most sought-after doctor in that department is Dr. Quilter."
Camila gasped, "You're seriously observant."
Johnathon gave a faint smile but didn't respond. Then he looked her straight in the eye. "If you don't mind, come with me."
Camila looked puzzled. "What?"
"I'm pulling a few strings for you," Johnathon said.
Camila froze. Then, Johnathon led her through the staff corridor, straight up to the fifth floor of the Department of Traditional Medicine. He stopped outside an office, knocked gently, and called out politely, "Dr. Quilter?"
Andreas Quilter looked like the picture of an old-school sage—slightly thin, with a scholarly air about him. When he saw Johnathon at the door, he was a bit surprised. "Dr. Hemming? What brings you here?"
Johnathon was the hospital's unattainable heartthrob—distant and cold as ice. It didn't matter how high someone's title was or how skilled they were as a doctor; he never tried to make connections, never played nice to climb ladders.
Unless he was consulting or performing surgery, most of the time he kept to himself in the lab, focused entirely on his research.
So to see him standing at his door—let alone with a stunning young woman—was enough to shock Andreas a little.
"Dr. Quilter, would you mind doing me a favor?" Johnathon asked in that calm, steady voice of his.
Being asked for help by the hospital's most respected and elusive doctor left Andreas a little flattered and caught off guard.
He quickly invited them into his office. Normally a quiet, reserved old man, Andreas suddenly turned into a social butterfly—calling for his assistant to get them something to drink, all smiles and enthusiasm. It was like he'd become a completely different person.
As Johnathon explained the situation, Andreas's gaze drifted to Camila in surprise. He couldn't help asking, "Is this your girlfriend?"
Johnathon had never shown the slightest interest in women. It was hard for Andreas to imagine he'd go to this much trouble unless she was his girlfriend. Honestly, Andreas couldn't think of another explanation.
Andreas thought, 'Well, that explains it. No wonder he's always keeping his distance from all the female nurses and doctors. Turns out he's taken. What a loyal boyfriend.'
The word girlfriend made Camila instantly feel awkward. She figured this was clearly one giant misunderstanding.
