Camila's fingers trembled slightly. She didn't reply and just blocked Luke on WhatsApp without hesitation. Then, one by one, she found the rest of Noel's friends in her contacts and blocked every last one of them.
She figured since she'd broken up with Noel, it should be clean—no loose ends, no room left for anything else.
Only after blocking the final contact did she finally let out a breath. Just as she turned to find her hairdryer, a message came in from Johnathon. It was a detailed treatment schedule and follow-up care instructions he'd sent her.
Camila couldn't help but sigh inwardly, 'Johnathon really is a dedicated doctor. So attentive, so thorough.'
She then sent a quick thank you. But Johnathon just replied simply: [No need.]
Camila texted back: [I'll be on time for the next session. I promise.]
Johnathon responded almost immediately: [If you need anything, don't hesitate to reach out.]
Camila thought for a moment, then sent another message: [Dr. Hemming, are you always this thorough with your patients? You seriously deserve a medal or something.]
She saw the typing bubble appear. Curious, she waited to see what he'd say. But a few seconds later, the typing bubble vanished and there was no message.
Camila blinked and sent a question mark.
Johnathon, water glass in hand, was about to take a sip when his eyes landed on the question mark. He stared at it for a few seconds, then his elegant fingers tapped out a text: [When are you bringing me that medal? I'll be waiting.]
Camila didn't know what to say now. She hadn't meant it literally—just a throwaway compliment. But he actually took it seriously.
After a moment of thought, she scrolled through the emojis and sent over a gold medal emoji.
Johnathon stared at it, utterly speechless.
Camila followed up with another text: [Want more? I've got a whole series of memes ready to go.]
Johnathon replied: [Thanks, I'm good.]
Camila sent a couple of laughing emojis. She could practically picture Johnathon shaking his head through the screen.
Thinking the conversation was over, she didn't expect another message a few minutes later. Johnathon: [You're looking for an apartment?]
She had just posted about apartment hunting on Twitter earlier. She figured he must've seen it.
Camila: [Yeah, I'm still looking.]
Johnathon: [Any specific requirements?]
Camila wondered, reading his message, 'Is he offering to help me apartment-hunt?' She then listed out what she was looking for.
There was a pause. Then came his reply: [I know a place that might be perfect for you.]
Camila instantly perked up and typed: [Where is it?]
Johnathon sent over the name of a residential complex.
Camila stared at the name for a few seconds, stunned. Camila: [That's a luxury neighborhood. Pretty sure it's way out of my budget.]
Johnathon responded right away: [The owner's leaving the country and just wants someone to take care of the place. Money's not the issue. You can probably negotiate.]
Camila thought, 'Wait, deals like this actually exist?' Her eyes lit up as she texted: [Can you ask for me?]
Johnathon: [Sure.]
Camila could hardly contain her excitement. She'd spent the whole evening scrolling through listings online and hadn't found a single place she liked. Johnathon's message was a gift from the universe.
Meanwhile, after dropping Shirley off, Noel turned to Luke with a dark, unreadable stare. "Who'd you send that photo to?"
Luke's heart skipped a beat. "What photo?"
"You tell me." Noel might've been drunk, but he wasn't blind and he sure as hell hadn't let his guard down. He'd caught Luke snapping that picture out of the corner of his eye when he kissed Shirley.
Luke gave a sheepish grin, scratching his nose. "Obviously, I sent it to Camila."
Noel raised an eyebrow, saying nothing, clearly waiting for more.
Sure enough, Luke added, "I just wanted to make sure she stops acting up and remind her you're not exactly hung up on her. It's not like you can't live without her."
Noel's eyes darkened, a cold laugh slipping out. "You think I care what she thinks?"
"Of course not. I was just standing up for you, man."
"Whatever's going on between me and her, stay out of it."
"Fine by me. After tonight, even if you beg me to get involved, I won't."
