Her eyes swept over Camila with disdain, her nose practically tilted to the sky. The judgment and disgust in her gaze were anything but subtle. "Shouldn't you be waiting hand and foot on Noey? What are you doing at a hospital this early?"
The woman was none other than Noel's mother—Sofia Anderson, the matriarch of the Anderson family. In their social circle, she was someone everyone bent over backwards to please.
Sofia was there to visit a friend. She'd just walked out of the inpatient wing when she spotted a familiar figure. At first, she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her, but a closer look confirmed it—it was actually Camila.
She'd never approved of this so-called future daughter-in-law. In her opinion, her brilliant son deserved someone with pedigree, looks, education, and elegance—not the daughter of some low-tier engineer who could barely hold her own in high society.
Sofia pondered, 'If it hadn't been for Camila's father getting lucky enough to save Noey's grandfather back then, and Noey's grandmother insisting she was the perfect granddaughter-in-law, there's no way this girl would've gotten close to our family.'
Sofia's scornful gaze dropped to Camila's belly, as if something unpleasant had just crossed her mind. Her brows pinched with irritation. "You're not here for a pregnancy checkup, are you? Take a look at your pathetic status.
"Even if you had Noey's child, I still wouldn't acknowledge it. So do yourself a favor and let go of that fantasy of marrying into our family."
She added, "Instead of wasting time playing those dirty little games like trying to get ahead by having a baby, why don't you put that effort into actually taking care of Noey?
"Maybe when he does get married, he'll at least remember your 'service' and won't kick you out with nothing."
Three years ago, Sofia might've made the insults even nastier. But over time, she'd come to terms with it. Noel's grandmother, Erica Anderson, might've had a soft spot for Camila, only ever acknowledging her as the one true granddaughter-in-law.
But in Sofia's eyes, Erica didn't have many years left. The moment Erica breathed her last, Sofia knew the entire Anderson family would be hers to rule.
In Sofia's plan, there was no way Noel would actually marry Camila. That "fiancée" title was just for show. She figured that once Erica passed, Noel would be paired with someone of proper lineage and standing—a real socialite, not the daughter of some nobody engineer.
Still, Sofia wasn't about to let Camila off the hook too easily. She expected Camila to bow her head and agree meekly, but what she got instead was a sharp, mocking laugh.
Camila scoffed, "Mrs. Anderson, rest assured. I have zero intention of having Noel's child. And as for marrying into the Anderson family? You can keep that honor. Whoever wants it can have it. I'm not interested."
Her words were light as air, but packed with biting sarcasm.
Noel had always respected his mother. Back then, Camila used to swallow every insult, every jab, every petty humiliation Sofia threw her way just so Noel wouldn't be stuck in the middle.
She'd bent over backwards trying to please her future mother-in-law, going out of her way to learn all of Sofia's likes and dislikes, reshaping herself into the perfect high-society daughter-in-law Sofia expected. But in the process, she'd twisted herself into someone she could barely recognize.
But things were different now. After breaking up with Noel, Camila no longer felt obligated to tolerate Sofia's attitude, and she would treat her the same as anyone else.
Sofia had always been the one others tiptoed around. No one had ever dared speak to her like that—least of all Camila, who used to let her mock and insult her without ever talking back.
The fact that it was Camila now standing up to her made it all the more unbearable. Rage shot through Sofia like a lit match to dry grass.
She jabbed a finger toward Camila's face, her voice sharp with fury. "Who the hell do you think you are, talking to me like that?
"Don't go thinking you can do whatever you want just because Erica's got your back. One word from me, and Noel will dump you on the spot."
Camila said calmly, "Don't bother. Noel and I already broke up."
