Bryson's pov
Raiden clung to me, sensing the rising tension. Emily's eyes filled with sadness, and her voice was barely above a whisper when she replied, "It's not that simple, Bryson. There are things you don't know, things I can't explain right now. Please understand-"
A dry chuckle left my lips. She wants me to understand her running away again, this time with my son in her arms?
Did she lose her sanity those four years we were apart? Had she forgotten who I was? How can she possibly think I can let her go? Especially now with my son clinging to me, confused and not knowing why there is tension between his parents.
"Explain then Emily! Tell me why you need to stay away from me." I snapped, struggling to keep my voice from breaking. The vulnerability in my voice was exposed as I looked at her in a pleading way.
" I deserve to know what's going on, " I whispered, feeling my chest tighten as I looked at her sad expression. This was hurting her to, so why does she want to leave so bad?
"Don't you think I need to know what's going on?" I baited her and she flinched.
Emily's shoulders slumped, and for a moment, it seemed like she was on the edge of revealing the hidden truth. But of course she didn't.
She sighed, her voice barely above a whisper, "It's not just about me, Bryson. It's about Raiden too. I can't say. I can't risk putting you or Raiden in danger. "
There was a genuine fear in her eyes, something I hadn't seen before that sent a shiver racing down my spine.
It was as if she carried a burden too heavy for her to share. Not even with me and that made me almost crumble before her. I was on the brink of getting on my knees for her, I was on the brink of begging her.
My anger and frustration were momentarily replaced with concern. I reached out to her, wanting to touch her, but she took a step back, avoiding my touch. My hand fall limp at my side as my heart tears.
Was my touch so revolting that she didn't want me to comfort her?
Her voice wavered as she continued, "Bryson, you have to trust me. I can't explain everything now, but I promise I'll find a way to reveal the truth. Please, for now, let us go."
She was asking for something nearly impossible. To trust her without knowing the full story. To let her leave with our son. I clenched my fists, struggling with the emotions that had been tearing me apart.
I couldn't do it. No matter how much urgency and fear was in her voice. I couldn't let her go. Not anymore.
I shook my head. "No."
She looked surprised yet her eyes showed that she already expected my answer.
"Bryce-
" You lost the right to call me Bryce when you left me." I cut in sharply. I saw her eyes fill with tears and I wanted to reach to comfort her but I was playing a role. Being a puppy and soft with her was clearly not working. I needed to be an alpha and a man who didn't want to lose his family no matter the cost.
I'd make her hate me. I'd make her resent me.
If that meant that she would remain by my side with our son. I'd turn the bad guy.
" You're coming with me. Both of you." I said sternly, watching the emotions of fear race through the globes of her eyes. "Whatever you're scared to face Emily, we will fight together."
I meant every fucking word. She didn't know I would rather lose my position, my life, risk everything for both her and Raiden. She didn't know she and our son was my life.
I'd die before I let anyone touch a single hair on their head.
"Bryce-
"Alpha Bryson." I stated firmly, watching her flinch a little. She looked at her sister, as if silently asking her for help.
I was not stupid. Something was off about Emily and her sister. Both were rare colored wolves. If I remember correctly about the passage in the book I read about white wolves, I knew the power she possessed.
And I may know some of the reason she wants to go into hiding.
I also knew that if they wanted to, they could take on both me and Shawn, even Kira too. I can sense her power, I can literally bend my knee for her. She was stronger than me, an alpha.
I was only hoping she would not fight this.
"Get in the vehicle Emily." I said in a clip tone.
"Let's go with daddy mom," Raiden's little innocent voice fluttered in the tensed air. Emily snaps her eyes to him, her gaze softening until a tear slipped out of her eye. She looked at me and swallowed.
"Please, Emily," I said, trying to temper the sternness in my voice with a note of desperation. "I can't lose you again. We can face whatever danger together."
She looked back at her sister and Shawn was the one who spoke up. " Please Emily, I can't lose my mate before I even got to know her."
Emily looked wrenched. For a moment I thought she would give up the fight but instead she shook her head. " We can't."
Frustration boiled in my veins. Did she not trust that I can protect her?
" Then if you do not come with me, I will follow you. You choose." I said truthfully. She must think I was dumb enough to lose her twice.
No matter what she chose, I was going to be there with her and our son.
Emily looked frustrated, rubbing her eyes before sighing loudly. She looked at Raiden then back at me, before giving a curt nod. "Fine."
She started for the vehicle and a huge grin emerged on my face. I hugged Raiden, fighting the urge to pump the air.
"Are you sure about this Emily?" Lucy asked, looking unsure as she side eye Shawn who was still admiring her.
" He won't stop," Came Emily's reply. " He won't let me go."
I followed after her like a happy puppy. At least she knew me.
She was heading for the back and I grabbed a hold of her arm. We both froze when we felt the familiar tingles.
Confused I let go of her arm and watch my hand in puzzlement. We were no longer mated so why do I feel those sparks?
I shook my head and focused on her. " Sit at the front." I demanded her.
"What?!" Kira screeched. I ignored her.
Emily turn to me, eyeing me before sighing. With a nod she makes her way to the passenger's side while Kira glares at her.
"Are you really going to trust her?" Kira grumbled. "She left you. She can again."
" There's no one I trust more, Kira." I admitted as I called Shawn and Lucy over.
