ALINA
I wished for just a second that Analide would have just disappeared from the house.
Why the hell was she always showing up at the most inconvenient times?
I shrugged. “Analide invited me on a vacation with her friends. I haven't decided yet if I'll be going.”
Luca's face tightened, but he nodded and lifted Maya into his arms. She hugged his neck tight as he lifted Leo too and walked away.
Analide stepped closer, lowering her tone. “Oh, Alina. Luca doesn't look pleased. I hope I didn't get you into trouble with your husband?”
I smiled with great difficulty. “No.”
I was too worried about Pietro and Luca to be bothered with Analide. I wished she hadn't come at all.
“Great then! Will you have some time to see my designs?”
I was shaking my head before she was done speaking. “I've had a brutal day. I'll tell you when I'm available to do that.”
Her lips turned down at the corners with disappointment, then she brightened and took my arm. “Can Ethan and I stay for dinner then? I'm sure Luca would love to have company.”
I was quite certain Luca would very much not like to have company. My body was still thrumming softly with the adrenaline of the gun fight and the make out session in the car.
I pulled my arm from Analide’s, packed up the stack of documents and turned to Ethan who had been quiet the entire time.
“I'll look through this and get them to you soon.” I said as I herded them to the door. “I'm all tired out, so we'll get together later and talk about the vacation.”
Analide pushed her lower lip out. “But I'd like to stay, I'll be no trouble at all, I promise. I can watch the kids while you and Luca have a relaxing meal.” She offered.
Ethan took her hand, saying sternly. “I know you're used to having your way, Analide Talciro, but Alina wants time alone with her family and I think we should give her that.”
Analide pouted, but finally agreed, bringing me relief. She smacked a kiss on my cheeks and backed away, waving goodbye as she walked away.
I was relieved to be rid of her. She was becoming clingy and overly sweet with her words. I wasn't sure I trusted her anymore.
I stood at the door for a moment, hoping that Pietro was safe and that Lorenzo and Marco would be back safely.
By the time I went back to the kitchen, Luca already had the children eating dinner. He was holding Maya as he ate.
I watched them from the door, struck again by how easily he and the children had grown comfortable with each other.
How could a man like that not want his own kids? And maybe in the end I could get to a point where it didn't matter? After all I would be adopting the kids.
Leo had nightmares and he always allowed Luca to hold him until he fell asleep again. He still cried for his mother too.
“Watching us like a stalker?” Luca asked, smiling at me.
I hurried into the room, embarrassed at being caught staring. Luca made a plate for me, all the while with Maya in his arms.
“Why didn't you tell me about the vacation?” He asked, sitting beside me.
My heart stuttered for a second, skipping a beat as I tried to find the right words to explain. “Her idea sort of gave me an idea.”
“What idea?” Luca asked, feeding Maya a spoonful of mashed potatoes.
I inhaled, hoping he wouldn't immediately strike down my idea. “Us. We should go on a vacation together instead. I know things are really up in the air now, but…”
Luca placed a finger on my lips, grinning as his eyes lit up. They looked brown instead of their usual black. “I think that's perfect.”
I nodded eagerly, smiling at Leo. He asked. “Do we go too?”
I smacked a kiss on his cheeks. “We'd never leave you two behind.” I promised him right there.
He nodded and finished his food. Luca took Leo and Maya to their room and handed them to their nannies.
I sat alone at the table, thinking of everything that had happened today, when suddenly, Pietro walked in, looking tired and blood stained.
I gasped with joy, running over to him especially when I saw Lorenzo limp in behind him.
“Oh, Thank God. I was so worried about you.” I wrapped my arm around Pietro’s shoulder, sniffling softly.
He groaned and I stepped back quickly, realizing he was shot in the shoulder. He already had a bandage over his arm and I knew the doctor had already seen him.
He bumped my nose like he always had. “I'm fine. Don't worry. I'm glad to see you escaped unscathed.”
When they left, I had food taken to their quarters. Luca returned and I informed him that they were back. He wanted to hurry to their rooms but I shook my head.
“Allow them rest. We all need rest. And we need to talk.” I said, taking his hand. My hand looked so tiny compared to his and I felt safer just holding his hand.
“What about?” He asked, kissing me on my hair.
“My uncle.” I knew there would be retaliation from my uncle Alberto, and that we had to be ready for it somehow.
Luca stopped outside the door. “Do you want me to apologize?”
I rolled my eyes. “No, Luca. Roberto had it coming. He signed his death warrant the first time he hit me. I just wish I was the one who sank that bullet into his skull.”
Luca chuckled. “You're blood thirsty, Sunshine. But I don't see you shooting your uncle in cold blood.”
Luca bent his lips head and I closed my eyes, my heart pumping twice as fast. He had barely pressed a kiss to my lips when my phone rang, startling us apart.
“Fuck!” Luca swore as he jerked away and knocked his head on the wall.
I giggled softly, digging my phone out and leaning up to kiss his forehead. His blind stumble as he straighted was even more funny.
“Yes. Laugh at my pain.” He muttered as I answered the call. It was my mother.
Her voice rang out immediately. “Alina!? What is this I hear about your uncle? I told you to divorce that bastard sooner! Now look, he has killed Roberto!”
Luca's eyes darkened as he pulled away. His shoulders drew tense as lips tightened. “You're divorcing me?”
My heart stalled as I was drenched in panic.
