                    LUCA
Alina's look of panic told me all I needed to hear. Her mother was still rattling on from the phone, but I couldn't hear her words anymore.
“Luca, I promise…” Alina started, stretching her hand to touch my shoulder.
I flinched away, pain I hadn't been expecting lacerating my heart as I took a step back.“You agreed to go on vacation with me, knowing you're planning a divorce?”
“Luca…I was going to tell you…” She backed away at my frigid tone.
For fuck’s sake. Every damned time I let my guard down, this was always my reward. Every single fucking time!
I turned away and stalked down the hallway away from her. Alina ran after me but I turned and warned her off.
“Stay away from me, Alina. I swear just stay away,” I said. “Give me some space.”
She nodded and stopped, tears pooling in her gaze. Her red hair glinted in waves around her face and I leaned in and kissed her as if unable to help myself. Then I walked away.
The night was long and nasty. I spent it tossing and turning in bed. I was awake before dawn the next morning.
I paced impatiently around my room while I waited for sunrise. I dropped by to see Maya and Leo, then left the house before I could run into Alina.
Marco was standing by my car. “You look like hell, Boss.” He murmured.
“Maybe I am in hell.” I said as we drove out.
I was destabilized. If I wasn't there when her mother called, would she ever have told me that she was leaving me?
My head felt full, my stomach biting terribly at the thought. I knew I had come to enjoy having Alina as my wife, but I hadn't expected the sharp slam of hurt and betrayal at the thought of her divorcing me.
Alina called. I turned my phone face down and let it ring. Marco tried talking, but I wasn’t listening. I was still displeased about the comment he had made.
Had my father threatened her? Was that why she wanted to leave? And if he had, why didn't she tell me?
I pulled up at the office and spent the morning catching up on the stack of documents and memos Elena had left for me.
I was almost done with the last batch when Pietro, Lorenzo, Dario, Viktor and Rafael walked in.
“Boss?” Rafael greeted, smoking as always. I glared at him and he immediately put out the cigar.
“Sit. We have a problem on our hands, I'm hoping it's one we'll be able to put out soon.” I told them.
Pietro sat, grunting with pain. I turned to him. “Thank you for fighting on my side, Pietro. I'll pay you back some day. I owe you my life.”
Pietro chuckled, his dark eyes lighting. “Take care of Alina. That's all the payment I ask for.”
Alina, who was considering a divorce? A tight constriction in my chest made it difficult for me to speak for a moment and I cleared my throat to clear it.
“I am sure Alina will be safe as long as she's with me.” I told him, being as truthful as I could.
“Hear hear.” Dario and Viktor said, smirking.
I rolled my eyes, then got down to business. “As some of you know. I killed Roberto Costa, my wife's uncle, yesterday in a gunfight.”
Dario, Viktor and Rafael sat up, their eyes widening in Tandem. “Roberto? He's family, what happened?” Dario asked.
“He tried to kill my wife. I didn't bring you here to answer questions, but to give orders. The most we'll have before his brother Alberto retaliates is a few days, we have to make good use of it.”
Pietro nodded. “Roberto was the hot head, but Alberto is the planner. He is patient and he will plan for months or years, but when he hits, he will hit where it hurts.”
Years? What if Alina divorced me and her uncle swooped in and hurt her? The thought was too much to swallow.
As was the fact that I kept thinking about it.
“We'll start by tightening the guards. Each patrol of guards must be doubled. Tighten security around our warehouses and docked ships. No one and I repeat, no one who isn't our man should have access to those places. Shoot to kill if you have to.”
I concluded the meeting and the room emptied.
My thoughts fell back to Alina. How could she so confidently even consider leaving? Was she done? Or had I pissed her off so much that she didn't care about her safety anymore?
I jerked up in the seat and felt sweat burn on my scalp. Would she take Leo and Maya with her when she did? I fisted my fingers at my sides.
I wouldn't let her!
The door opened and Marco stood there. He smirked. “A word of warning. Mrs. Marino is headed here and she doesn't look pleased.”
Fuck! I nodded, gritting my teeth as I cleared all emotions off my face.
A knock sounded at the door and a moment later, Alina stepped in. She looked stunning in a red dress the color of her hair and cobalt earrings the color of her eyes.
I felt queasy suddenly, like I would throw up. My heart squeezed as the truth made me dizzy. If she left, I would miss her badly.
“What are you doing here, Alina?” I asked dismissively like I didn't care much for her answer.
Her hands dropped to the ties holding her dress together. She loosened them and her dress fell, pooling at her feet. She was completely naked before me.
I dragged in a ragged breath and felt the pounding of my heart escalate. She pulled a pin from her hair and it tumbled down around her shoulders.
She sauntered to my desk, her hips swinging from side to side. My gaze ran all over her body, a wildfire roaring down my back.
“Fuck, Alina. What the hell are you doing?” I groaned, my fingers itching to lift her into my lap.
“Shut up, Luca and listen to me.” She said.
She shoved my desk back and climbed onto it, spreading her legs as my pulse rocketed.
