ALINA
I was disappointed. For some reason I'd really thought there was no way in hell Luca would be able to pull out this time.
And somewhere in hell he'd found the will power to.
I smiled, kissing him gently on the lips to hide the ghost of disappointment fluttering through my heart. “I really thought you'd come inside me.”
“Alina.” The warning in his voice pierced through my lust induced haze and I nodded.
“You're right, I'll try to not ruin the moment.” I kissed him, trying to forget as he slumped into his chair and lifted me back onto his lap.
My knees were still shaking, and I could barely pull in a full breath, so yeah, I wouldn't ruin the moment.
I climbed off, steadying my legs on the floor and walking away. Luca sat back with his head against the chair and closed his eyes, his bare chest glistening with sweat.
I found my dress and wrapped it around me. “I'll let you get back to work.”
He shot out of the chair and stalked over to me. “If you leave, we’re leaving together. Don't even think about it.”
I smiled, my heart loosening for once, since the moment he'd heard my mother on the phone last night. I relaxed my shoulders and stepped into the cave of his arms.
“Fine. We're still going on vacation huh?” I didn't expect he'd cancelled it, but it didn't cost anything to make sure.
“Yes, we are, Little Sunshine.” He dotted tiny kisses along my forehead and landed on my lips, placing a gentle kiss. “I'm sorry too, Alina. I'm sorry.”
I nodded against his chest, just inhaling and exhaling until there was peace in the air between us. By the time we left the office and went home for dinner, it was dark outside.
Luca drove us back home, stopping by a restaurant to pick up sushi for dinner. The kids were still at dinner when we arrived, and we sat with them.
Megan excused herself and left us to dinner together. I took Leo's hand when Luca lifted Maya onto his lap. “How was your day? Did you do anything fun?”
He shook his head. “There's nothing to do but play with my toys.”
Luca quirked his lips, chuckling softly. “That's not fun for you?” He asked.
Leo shook his head. “No!”
“What would be fun to you?” I lifted him onto my lap, and smoothed his hair back from his forehead.
“The park? Sunlight? My mother used to take us to the park everyday. Where's mother?” He asked, craning his head back to meet my eyes.
“I'll take you to the park when we go on vacation. What do you think?” I extended the offer, hoping he would be distracted by it. I remembered his meltdown and a bitter taste stood in my mouth.
So far, we hadn't been able to discover who had blown Valerie’s car up. Luca and I both suspected that it was her husband, Riot.
Leo smiled, though I could see the way his lips were turned down at the corners. “Yes. I'd like that.”
After dinner, Luca and I went up to our room while the children slept. Luca was oddly quiet and he kept tugging at the nape of his neck.
I took his hands and placed them around my waist, gazing up at the big, bad man looming over me. “What's wrong?”
He shook his head, pressing his lips against mine for a second. “Nothing. Come on, let's shower.”
But the entire shower, Luca was worried. I could feel the worry steaming off his stiff body. When we were done, I led him to the bed. “Is there something wrong?”
He sighed, blowing out a warm breathe. “It's the kids. Do you think they need a therapist? Leo and Maya were in the car when their mother died, but Leo still asks for her as though she's alive.”
I sat beside him, rubbing my fingers over his. “You can't blame him for that…”
His jaw flexed. “I'm not blaming him, Alina.”
I nodded quickly. “I know. I meant it's most probably normal. He's a child and all he's had so far has been his mother. He most probably doesn't want to believe she's really gone.”
“Do we get him a child therapist then?” Luca asked, his brows right with worry and concern.
I gazed at him, struck not for the first time how utterly contrasting it was that Luca could worry so completely about Leo and Maya, but still not consider having his own kids.
He obviously loved them to bits, so what was the issue? What was holding him back?
An idea popped into my head, maybe if I could discover what it was, then I could change his mind on it.
“Let's give him a few more days and see how he feels. If he's not any better after the vacation, then we'll get him a private therapist. One that can come here.” I suggested.
Luca lifted my hand to his lips and kissed my knuckles. “You're right, what would I do without you, huh?”
I giggled when he rolled me onto the bed and tickled my sides until I couldn't breathe.
“Alina?” He pulled back suddenly. My heart did a nose dive and lurched uncomfortably. Luca barely called me by my real name unless he was angry or displeased.
I sat up. “Yes, Luca?”
Someone banged on the door loudly, making the both of us jump at once.
“Luca? You need to get here right now!” It was Pietro’s voice and he sounded damned worried. “I hope Alina is in there with you?”
I climbed off the bed and hurriedly dressed in something more presentable while Luca went to open the door, his upper body bare.
“Pietro? What's this about?”
“It's Riot, he's outside and he has the police with him.” Pietro’s eyes tracked over the room, searching for me. “He wants his kids back.”
The police? Right here in our home with Leo and Maya sleeping a few wings away? And at this time of the day?
