I whirled around and took Alina’s arm. “Go to Leo and Maya. Make sure they're dressed. Fast.”
She nodded, her fingers shaking in my grasp. “We can't leave with them. That's kidnapping, Riot would have a case in court.”
“Fuck Riot. Valerie gave the children to you. They're yours. He's not even their real father. Go dress them.”
I pushed her out of the door and closed it behind me, heading towards the front door while she headed deeper into the house.
“How many of them?” I asked Pietro who fell into step beside me, his gun showing at his waist.
I cursed, hurrying back to the room where I found my holster and buckled it around my waist, pulling a dark shirt over it.
“Three policemen, and Riot, plus a few of his men.” Pietro answered.
“Where the hell is Marco?” I muttered, stopping for a moment.
“I'm not sure.” Pietro answered. “I'll find him.” He backed away and walked off.
I stepped into the living room, folding my arms across my chest. Riot was seated on my couch with this legs crossed, a gun displayed on his lap.
Three police men stood around, while three men who I assumed were Riot’s men flanked him.
“Good evening, how may I help you? It's rather late for a casual visit.” I kept my eyes on the tallest of the police men. He seemed the least nervous which likely meant he was likely to be their leader.
As I'd assumed, he answered. “Mr. Alvarado had lodged a compliant against you. We'd like you to answer some questions. This matter is of utmost importance.”
I nodded and invited them to seat. I could tell there would be no fighting, not with the police men right there. “Who lodged a complaint against me?”
“You fucking heard the cop, bring my children. First, you killed my wife, and then you kidnapped my kids? Bloody hell!” Riot snapped, interrupting.
I ignored him, conversing with the Policeman. “What's your name?”
“I'm Riley and these are my colleagues, Matt and Kevin.” He pointed at the other two beside him.
“Riley, It's too late right now to wake the children as Riot requested. Can we deal with this in the morning?” I delivered the question calmly, putting myself under control as much as I could, so as not to flip my gun on Riot.
Not only had he sullied my house by daring to come here, but he'd called the cops on me.
Riley shook his head. “This is a case of kidnapping. I don't believe we can, Mr. Marino.”
“If you know who I am, then you know there's no way I'd risk my reputation on something as despicable as kidnapping.”
Matter of fact, I'd kidnapped people multiple times, but never people who were innocent, or children.
Alina stepped into the room and stood beside me, placing her hand on my shoulder. The action grounded me, backing me away from the edge.
“Hello, Mr. Riley. You may not know, but Valerie made me the legal guardian over the two children. What that means is that they have every right to be here, and that if you want to question us, then you'll have to arrest my husband and I. If not, then like he said, it is late and we'd prefer that you return by morning with a warrant for our arrest.”
Riley cleared his throat, looking uncomfortable. I could have grabbed Alina and kissed her. It was as simple as that. Riot's face blanched when Riley nodded.
“We'll be back tomorrow. Neither of you or the kids are allowed to leave the country. Do you understand?”
We both nodded and watched Riley turn to Riot. “Let's go, you heard them.”
Riot jumped to his feet, sweeping his eyes angrily over the room. “You dumb fuck! Why the hell did I bring you here? I want my children, and I want them now!”
Riley’s lips tightened. “Let's go Mr. Alvarado.” He walked out and reluctantly, Riot followed him.
Riot stopped and looked back. “I hope you don't think you've won, because you sure as hell haven't. I'll be back, and you'll hate me this time.”
He turned and followed Riley stubbornly out with his men behind him.
Alina’s shoulder sagged and she looked up at me desperately. “That was close. What if they take the children from us?”
Her eyes brimmed with tears the next second and I took her shoulders, shaking her slightly. Riot wasn't taking Maya and Leo.
“I'm not going to allow that to happen. You don't have to worry about it. Do you understand?”
She swallowed and laid her head against my chest. “I won't be able to take it if he does. I just won't. They're already mine. I won't let them go.”
She was trembling in my arms and I held her tighter. “You won't have to let them go. Riot is only causing trouble for himself.”
She pulled away and we walked to Maya and Leo’s room. We sat beside them, just watching their cherubic faces as they slept.
“I wished Valerie never left them behind. I was grown when I lost my father, but I miss him every single day since he passed. I can't imagine what it must feel like for them, especially now when they're still so young.” Alina said.
“That's why they have us. We can't replace their mother, but we can be the best guardians they could hope for.”
Alina’s throat bobbed. “I can't believe I'm hearing you say that. Isn't it wild that you love children, but just not your own?”
