ALINA
The last thing I wanted to do was have a meeting with Victoria, but I could admit I was curious to see what she was here for.
The door opened and I heard the tap of her heel before Victoria stepped into the room. She stopped at the door, looking around until her eyes landed on mine.
They flashed with several emotions than I could read before going cold and icy. I held her gaze, refusing to back down.
Victoria was gorgeous, I could understand why she had been Luca’s mistress, and I could even forgive that, but chasing my man when he was married to me was a no no.
She should have gotten the message by now.
“Come seat.” I offered, pointing at the chair in front of my desk.
She strode confidently into the room, grimacing before she sat delicately, crossing one leg over the other. “It's smells like dust and cigars in here. You're a woman, you should do better.”
What would she do if I leaned across the table and just slapped that stupid, smug look off her face? Would she go cry to Riot? Or would she try to fight me back?
I shrugged. “It's my office, Victoria. How about we get to what you want? Why are you here? I'm guessing you're not just here to criticize the state of my office?”
She pressed her lips together. “I have a deal for you.”
I rolled my eyes. “I don't make deals with women who don't respect me. Definitely not with my husband's former mistress.”
She lifted her bag off her lap, riffled in it for a second and came back with a piece of paper. She handed it to me.
“I know you're trying to take the children from Riot. I'm willing to help you.” She offered, nodding at the paper. “That's information you wouldn't find anywhere else.”
The paper had a phone number on it. There was no number on it or a reference for who it belonged to. “What do I do with this?”
“If you send Riot to prison, you get to keep the children. That's the number of the man Riot paid to blow Valerie's car up. Find him and you've won your case. Riot goes to prison and you go scot free.”
Victoria sat back like she'd handed me the holy Grail, which in a way she had because she was right. If we could find the man who blew up Valerie’s car and get him to confess with evidence against Riot, we pretty much would have a victory.
I handed her the paper back.
I didn't want her to think it was a given that I would accept her so called deal.
She took it, lifting a brow. “You don't want it.”
“I'll like to know what you want in exchange for that.”
She laughed softly. “You're sharp. I want Luca.”
I felt a spell of anger so sharp that for a second, I could feel myself standing and bashing her head against the back of her chair.
I sighed, shaking the image off. It wasn't my nature to think violent thoughts, but these months with Luca was causing his attitude to rub off on me.
“No. Get out of my office.”
“We both know keeping the children is your idea. Luca has never once wanted kids. Why don't you take the children and let him go?”
Victoria hissed the words, leaning forward to glare at me. Her eyes were piercing and she looked fierce and beautiful.
I leaned forward and caught her jaw, forcing her still when she tried to pull away from my grasp.
The pulse at the base of her throat was throbbing, maybe from fear or adrenaline.
“I'll never let him go, Victoria. Luca is my husband. I don't care, and I hope you never come back here, because if you do, I won't be so merciful!”
I spat the words out and let her go. She sat back, huffing angrily. “I hate you so much. Oh my goodness, I can't compute it. You stepped in and ruined my carefully planned life and think I'll forgive you for it? Never, Alina! Never.”
I shook my head, stunned by her foolishness. “Luca obviously didn't think you were good enough for anything more than a mistress or he would have married you. You can't blame me for that.”
I could see from the splotchy color that stained her cheeks that the words had landed right on their mark.
I leaned back, shrugging. “I'm sorry, but obviously the truth has to be told huh?”
Victoria was shaking. My phone rang suddenly and I found it, chuckling under my breathe when I saw who it was.
I answered the call, putting it on loud speaker. Baby?”
“I've just finished my meeting with Mr. Talciro. We've settled on a mid figure for our deal. Are you free for lunch? We can buy more books on our way back.”
His reply was perfect. I grinned at Victoria. “Yes, baby. I'd love that very much.”
“Alright, I'll pick you up in a few minutes.” He ended the call.
I smiled sweetly at Victoria. “Did that sound to you like a man who would be even vaguely interested in you, Victoria?”
She pulled her bag strap over her shoulder with jerky movements and stepped towards the door with her hand inside it.
“And you can dump that piece of paper, Victoria, I have the number memorized. Thank you for your help.” I added.
She stopped, going rigid. Within a second, she pulled her hand from her bag and turned towards me. The moment happened almost in slow motion.
One second I was feeling victorious for having kept my patience, and the next, I was yelling in pain as Victoria sprayed my face.
The pepper spray hit my face, and the next second I couldn't breathe as it filled my mouth, eyes, ears and nose.
“You stupid bitch, I wish I had a gun, I'd kill you right now!” She yelled in my face, dousing me with more of the spray.
I was blinded, matter of fact, I thought I would die if the pain didn't go away.
I screamed, calling Pietro into the room.
