Done with the call, I slid the phone into my bag, my entire body shaky.
I shouldn't have called Vector. He was dangerous, more dangerous than I could handle.
The last time I'd called him, it had been…
I shuddered and backed away from that thought, my heart doing a weird thing in my chest.
I backed out of the driveway and went back home. I needed to tell Luca about Vector, but I wasn't looking forward to that conversation.
When I got home, Analide was already waiting for me. She was sitting on the couch, typing away rapidly at her phone.
She looked up when I closed the door and sprang off the couch. “Thank God you're here. I need your help!” She hurried over to my side, holding out her tablet to me.
I took the tab from her. On the screen were swatches of fabrics, all of them very gorgeous. All silk.
“Have you ever worn a silk bikini?” She asked as I walked over to the couch.
“Can't say I have. That would be pretty dangerous won't it? Silk is a slippery fabric.” I barely got to wear a bikini, but I planned on packing tons of them for our vacation.
Analide nodded, her hair flying around her face. “I think well padded that we could make the most gorgeous bikini sets.”
Analide made high fashion couture dresses and wanted to diversify into bikinis? The conversation was so mundane and drastic that it distracted me from everything else.
She needed my help to settle on the best colors and silk textures so that was what we did. She was a lot calmer, more settled and it made it easier to just relax into the conversation.
And it was a good way to spend the chunk of time I had before Luca got home. My stomach felt heavy as lead at the thought of Luca.
“Alina? Alina?” Analide shook me gently.
I fixed my eyes on her, realizing I'd zoned out. “Yes?”
“We're almost done here. We could go for brunch if you're free.” She offered eagerly.
I shook my head. I didn't want to leave the safety of the house. Until Vector got here, then it just didn't feel safe. Vector would do everything, make everything fine again.
“No. I have to get the children packed. We're going on vacation in two days.” I stood and smiled down at Analide. “Are you leaving now?”
Her entire body language changed. Her eyes flashed at me for just a second. I didn't need a book to tell me she was mad. After all she had invited me for a vacation and I'd said no, only to turn around and take one with my family.
“Analide? Are you leaving?” I asked again. She nodded and I walked her to the door, hugged her, made sure she had driven out of the driveway before returning to my room.
I found Pietro and asked him about Campbell. “Is it possible to have a phone call with him instead?”
He nodded and called my lawyer. Did Pietro know about Victoria, or had Luca and Marco managed to hide that from him too?
“Hello, Pietro?” Mr. Campbell answered.
I took the phone. “Mr. Campbell? This is Alina.”
“Alina? I expected we'd have a physical meeting. I didn't enjoy being stood up.”
A frisson of guilt chilled my insides so I apologized. “You're right. And I thank you for your patience. Did Pietro inform you why I needed your help?”
“Yes, he did. We'll continue with the adoption application in court, but it seems Mr. Riley has already appealed to a judge to block the case and it seems Judge Maison will accommodate him.”
“What can we do while we wait?”
“Nothing much. We need a DNA test to ascertain both kids are not Riot's. I'll apply to force Riot to comply with one while we wait.”
“Perfect. Thank you for your help. Call me with any developments.”
“You're welcome.”
I ended the call. I stood for a moment uncertainly, hoping Campbell would be able to get the adoption through. While I would love children of my own, until Luca changed his mind, that was impossible.
I would give all my love to these two.
As I walked back to my room, I found my own phone, typing it a number from memory. Victoria had given me a number, claiming it belonged to the man Riot had paid to blow up Valerie’s car.
I'd memorized it before handing it to her. Now, I waited for the call to go through, I fiddled with the thought of Vector.
Once he returned, honestly if he returned, I'd be able to breathe easier. Vector would protect my mother, while I had Luca’s protection.
It would mean I'd have less to worry about.
“Hello? Hello?” I heard a voice calling from my phone.
“Hello, this is Alina Costa.”
“Fucking bitch!” The voice on the other end swore and a second later, I heard the beep of the phone as he hung up.
I pulled the phone from my ears, feeling untethered for a second. That voice. There was something about it, a familiar quality that made my stomach quake.
Whoever that man was, even though he'd tried disguising his voice, I knew him.
Was it one of my father's men? Maybe I'd heard their voice but didn't really know who it was? Or maybe one of Luca’s men? Or was mother right and it was one of Luca’s enemies?
I didn't know and the uncomfortable feeling between my shoulder blades just itched more and more the longer I sat with the thought.
I got into bed, staying there until Luca returned. Immediately he stepped into the room, I scrambled out of bed and hurried to hug him.
He stood stiffly in my arms before his shoulders sagged and he laid his head against mine.
We stood silently for a few seconds, saving space for each other. When he pulled back, his eyes were clearer. He traced them over my face and kissed my jaw.
“How are you?” I asked, unbuttoning his shirt.
“Don't ask. It's been a shit show. But we got Mr. Talciro’s gold safely into the country.”
“No one died?” I asked hopefully.
“I didn't lose any of my men. Can't say the same for the other team.” Luca pulled me into his arms, burying his nose into my hair. “You still smell like that thing, tonka bean?”
“Yes, it's my custom scent.” The words were soft like smoke from a dying fire.
He lifted me into his arms, burying his face between my breasts. I leaned away gently, rubbing his scalp to help him relax.
“We're leaving on vacation after tomorrow. Your birthday is in five days. What do you want?” I asked as he dropped me on the bed.
“Nothing. I don't celebrate my birthday, Sunshine.” He turned me onto my stomach, and jerked my legs towards him so my back was arched. “I just want you.”
