ALINA
I blinked at him.
What kind of stupid question was that?
He was really asking if I thought he didn’t want me?
I folded my arms across my chest. I thought about ignoring him, but I was too angry. “Are you serious?”
Luca didn’t answer. He just stared at me like I was the one who wasn’t making sense.
I laughed, though I didn’t think his situation was funny anymore. “Your actions say everything, Luca. They speak louder than words.”
His eyes darkened. “Oh yeah?” His voice was tight. “And what do my actions say?”
My pulse kicked up, but I kept my chin high. “That you don’t want me.”
Luca threw his hands in the air, looking like he had just heard the most ridiculous thing ever. “That’s bullshit.”
“Is it?” I leaned in, my hands pressing into my lap. “You kissed me. You touched me. You had me spread out on that table like a fucking buffet,” I pressed my palms to my face, suddenly embarrassed, “and then you walked away. So forgive me for thinking you don’t want me.”
Luca cursed under his breath, dragging a hand through his hair. His leg bounced slightly, his fingers spreading on his thigh like he was trying to keep himself still.
“I walked away,” he said, his voice tight, “because I don’t want to hurt you.”
I laughed. It felt bitter. Hurting me? He was making me feel stupid for acting like a horny girl. “Hurt me?”
His eyes rested on me for so long I knew he wouldn’t answer. I leaned away from him. “You don’t need to worry about ever hurting me, Luca.”
“Why?
I snapped the words so fast, I barely had time to think them through.
“Because I’ll never fall in love with you.”
And yet, the second they left my mouth, my chest twisted.
A voice in my head whispered, Are you sure?
I swallowed hard.
Because the truth was when he had stepped into that room today, when he had taken control, when he had handled Roberto so angrily and with no doubt that he could, I had felt something.
Something I didn’t want to name.
Something that had made my stomach tighten and my heart feel fuller, faster.
I liked his authority.
I liked the violence, even.
Just for a moment. And it had been part of the reason I had been so angry.
My breath came out slowly. “I don’t want to fight anymore, Luca. I’m too tired.”
He breathed out roughly, his hands rubbing over his face.
My body was still tense, still aching, and I hated it.
“Just stop touching me,” I muttered. “I don’t like being aroused and left hanging.”
Luca grunted like he couldn’t believe I had just said that. “Oh, you think it’s just you?”
I lifted an eyebrow. He shifted slightly, adjusting himself, and I noticed, not for the first time, that he was still hard.
I flushed, but I refused to let my expression change.
“I’m hanging too, Alina,” he said. “You think this is easy for me?”
My eyes stayed on his, my voice sharp. “That’s your fault, isn’t it?”
His nostrils flared. “So what, you want me to fuck you in the car?”
I turned my head, looking back out the window. “I don’t care what you do.”
His jaw clenched. I ignored him.
I ignored the way my pulse was still racing.
Ignored the heat curling in my stomach.
I could still feel it.
Still feel the dampness between my thighs.
And the worst part?
The argument had made it worse.
My body was alive, charged, almost desperate with frustration.
The rest of the drive passed in silence.
Luca’s fingers drummed against his thigh, his breathing slow and controlled, but I could feel the tension radiating off him.
He was just as wound up as I was.
The second the car rolled to a stop, I threw the door open and stepped out.
I didn’t look back.
Didn’t wait for him.
I just walked straight inside, leaving him behind.
I wanted to pretend I wasn’t affected, that my pulse wasn’t still unsteady, that my thighs weren’t still damp, that my mind wasn’t still replaying everything that had happened in that car.
But my body wouldn’t let me forget.
I sighed, shaking off the thoughts as I made my way upstairs.
Sofia had just stepped out of her room, her hair pulled into a high ponytail. She stopped when she saw me.
“It’s time for dinner,” she said, her voice light, like she didn’t notice anything wrong.
I forced a small smile. “I’ll be down in a bit.”
Sofia nodded, disappearing down the hall.
I stepped into my room and closed the door, resting against it for a second.
I needed to reset.
I was too tense, my emotions too high, and my head was a damned mess. I couldn’t lead my father’s men if I allowed myself to be shaken by every little thing.
I grabbed some clothes to change into and stepped into the bathroom, peeling off my clothes and stepping under the shower.
The warm water beat against my shoulders, and I relaxed, placing my palms against the tiled wall.
I hadn’t eaten anything since morning.
Maybe food would help.
Maybe it would keep me from thinking about Luca’s hands, his mouth, and the way he had looked at me.
I inhaled, shutting my eyes.
No. I wasn’t going to think about that.
I finished up quickly, dressing in a simple blouse and jeans, pulling my wet hair into a loose braid. Then I headed downstairs.
Halfway to the dining room, I heard people shouting.
Luca’s voice was loud, and he was angry.
I slowed down and listened. Though I couldn’t make out what he was saying, his tone was enough.
I took a deep breath and stepped inside.
Luca’s father was standing, his face twisted with rage.
Luca was standing too. Both of them had their fingers in fists.
Sofia sat between them, her lips pressed tightly together, her eyes moving between father and son.
I barely had time to process the scene before Luca’s father turned his head.
His eyes landed on me, and he pointed. “That bitch needs to leave this house tonight before she gets you killed.”
My head filled up. Could this damned day get any worse?
Luca’s jaw clenched so tightly I thought his teeth might crack.
Sofia stiffened in her seat.
I swallowed, raising my shoulders and my chin.
I wasn’t going to react.
I wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of screaming the way I wanted to.
