ALINA
I could feel my head banging. I didn't want to say a word to anyone but I knew I wouldn't be able to rest until I knew how Luca had found out it was Uncle Roberto who stole the guns.
I looked down at my shaking hands and squeezed them hard until they stopped. Pietro was looking worried as he looked at me.
I didn't even bother telling him about the day I'd had. What was he going to do? I shouldn't care about Roberto but I was worried that Luca had killed him.
“Find whatever you can on Roberto, I want to know where he was, who he spoke to and what they said. Do you understand?" I told Pietro.
He nodded and walked away. I heard a sigh behind me. It was Luca.
The look on his face told me he had just heard my request. He didn't look particularly angry, but I could tell from his narrowed eyes that he wasn't pleased.
He sat in front of me. “You could have asked me, you know. I would have told you how I know."
I shrugged, looking away from him. I couldn't hold his eyes. “You were too angry. I didn't think you would tell me."
Luca stood up and walked around the room, his hands in his pocket. He stopped beside my chair. "Alina, your uncle deserves to die, but you don't need to worry because I didn't kill him."
I looked up at him, my lips hanging open in shock. He hadn't? Why not? I gulped. “Why didn't you?"
He squatted beside me, staring up at me for once. His eyes I saw were brown instead of the black they looked like all the time. “Because you're my wife and I understand how killing your uncle might make things difficult between us."
I nodded. "I'm sorry. I want to be the one who kills him.”
Luca frowned. "What did you say?”
I stood and paced around the way Luca had. Stealing from Luca was bad enough, but I was angry just thinking of my suspicions. I hadn't been able to convince myself that Roberto hadn't killed my father.
If he had, I wanted to be the one to put a bullet in his skull.
I turned to Luca. "I want to kill him myself. If he killed my father and I'm still not sure that he didn't, I want him to die by my hand.”
Luca tipped his head back and laughed. His laugh was dark and deep and he looked very handsome at that moment. I watched him, surprise on my face.
What was he laughing at?
He stood and nodded. “I didn't know my little sunshine was so bloodthirsty, but now that I do, I'll be more careful.”
Luca took my hand and I felt my body spark. What was he doing? I had told him I didn't want him touching me again. I hoped he wasn't about to, then immediately I hoped he was about to.
Luca bent his head and kissed my knuckles. “Thank you for letting me go into your territory.”
I swallowed the stone in my throat. I shrugged like it didn't matter. “You forget like you always say that I am a Marino now. The Costa territories also belong to you.”
Luca nodded. He stepped back. “Go up to bed. The next few days are going to be wild.”
I watched as his face tightened again. “Why?”
“Roberto might want to plan something else. I really thought he was smarter than this, but he's proving himself to be very foolish.”
I walked away from Luca without a word. I climbed into bed, then got out and found the dairy and started reading it. I didn't have much to do for the rest of the day.
Mikhail had called me immediately after the two trucks with Luca's guns had moved out. I'd told him to shut down the new warehouse.
I felt sorry I had called Uncle Alberto but not enough to call him to apologize. He had called me an embarrassment. I didn't know why they thought I should be embarrassed.
Did they expect i would let myself be killed instead of fight to protect my family? When they were murderers and thieves, how did they expect me to react?
I returned the diary to my closet and decided I'd sleep early when my door opened. I sat up, watching as Luca walked into the room.
He looked around the room strangely. I knew it was because it had been three days at least since he had been in here. I had been deliberately not thinking of him moving out of the room.
I folded my arms across my chest. I wasn't wearing a bra and my nipples were already responding to him being here alone with me. “What do you want?” I asked.
He was silent for a moment like he didn't really want to talk. Then he sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
I shifted uncomfortably. Why was Luca feeling reluctant? Luca took whatever he wanted without asking most days, what on the surface of the earth was making him hesitate now?
He finally looked at me firmly in the eyes. “Do you want to go out to dinner with me?”
What? Of everything I had expected that was the last thing to come to mind.
But my stomach had flipped. I was feeling confused, my body tingling.
I’d never eaten with Luca outside the house. Was he bringing Sofia too?
Did dinner mean a date? We were already married and after the long day we'd had, why was Luca even asking me to go anywhere with him?
And why did I want to say yes to him so badly?
