I walked into the dining room, stretching.
The house was quiet and I was already dressed for work.
Nothing had gone wrong so far so I was hoping for a less than busy day.
Sofia sat at the dining table, cup of tea in front of her, a book in her hand.
The sun was already up and it was shining on her blonde hair. She looked up as I walked in, closing the book and turning it face down on the table.
I had a feeling it was a book I wasn't supposed to know she was reading.
She smiled at me sweetly, which confirmed my suspicion. "Morning."
"Morning," I muttered, heading straight for the coffee pot. I poured myself a cup, took a sip, and pulled out a chair across from her.
She watched me over the rim of her cup, waiting.
I drank almost half the coffee before turning my attention to my waiting sister. “Where's Alina?”
She nodded upstairs. “Still in her room.”
I nodded. It meant I wouldn't get to see her before leaving for work. I felt heavily disappointed.
I finished my coffee. "Are you going back to London?" I asked Sofia.
Her fingers curled around her mug. She sighed. "You want an answer now?"
"Yeah."
She leaned back in her chair, tilting her head. "I don’t know yet. Things are bad right now. It feels wrong to leave."
I nodded, setting my cup down. "You can go if you want. But you’re not going alone. Two bodyguards minimum."
Sofia frowned. "Two?"
I gave her a serious look. She already knew things were very tense then, but I didn't know how bad they could get. "You’re not negotiating this."
She looked down at the table, looking like she wanted to argue with me. Finally, she looked up and nodded. "I need time to think."
"Fine. But I’m interviewing bodyguards in case you say yes."
She looked extremely frustrated, her mouth open as she laughed. “Of course, you are."
Sofia shook her head, but the irritation didn’t last. She stood, walked around the table, and wrapped her arms around me.
I was stiff for a second, not expecting that. It was a rule that my sister was my responsibility to protect and provide for, but hugging me was still a surprise.
I was caught off guard. I exhaled and rested a hand on her back, hugging her too.
I hadn’t realized how tense I’d been until then; until her arms tightened around me, and I felt mine relax even more.
I turned my head slightly, and kissed her cheeks. Sofia smiled against my chest.
I thought of Alina telling me Sofia would perfer going back to England. I hadn't even thought about that, but Alina had already gotten my sister to admit it in a few days.
I pulled back, remembering something else. “Why did you tell Alina about Bruno, you know we don't tell people about him.”
Sofia blinked up at me, eyes wide with mock innocence. "What do you mean?"
"You know I don’t like people knowing about him."
Sofia smiled. "I didn’t know your wife was ‘people.’"
I stared at her.
Then I rolled my eyes, shaking my head.
Why the hell did I even bother? I never won with her. She was ten steps ahead before I even started.
I turned to leave, but her voice stopped me.
"Luca."
I looked back.
She stood there, hands holding the back of a chair, her expression softer now. "Thank you. For everything. I know it’s not easy."
My throat closed up with emotions. My chest felt constricted. Why was I so emotional this morning?
I walked back to her, resting a hand on her shoulder. "You’re my priority. Whether it’s easy or not, you’ll always be safe."
She swallowed hard and nodded.
I held her eyes for a second longer. Then I turned and walked out.
Marco was already waiting by the car, leaning against the door with his arms crossed. His head turned when I stepped outside.
"Morning, Boss."
I nodded and pulled out my phone, dialing a number.
Leonard, my chief of security answered. Leonard handled recruiting men for all my security needs as well as making sure all my warehouses, buildings and businesses were safe. "Boss."
"Get two bodyguards ready for me to meet. Sofia needs security."
"Understood," Leonard said immediately.
He didn't ask questions as always.
The man had been with us for years, built like a damn tank, bald, with a scar running from his temple to his jaw. He looked like a man who’d been through hell and walked out of it.
"I will call you when they’re ready," he said, then hung up.
I slid my phone into my pocket. Marco still hadn’t moved. His eyes were on me. "Why are you sending Sofia away?" He asked.
I walked past him, toward the car. "She doesn’t like it here."
"Maybe leaving right now isn’t the smartest choice."
I stopped and turned. "Are you questioning me?"
Marco’s jaw tightened. For a second, one second, I saw anger flash in his eyes. Then he grinned, lifted both hands in the air, and laughed. "No, Boss."
Good.
I got in the car.
I had things to do at the office. Meetings. Calls. Decisions that would shift the way our business moved in the next few months.
Before any of that, I pulled out my phone and called Alina.
"Mm?" Her voice was thick with sleep when she answered. I could imagine her in bed, the sheets around her waist, her breasts heavy on her chest as she lay on her back.
Heat shot straight to my dick.
If I kept thinking about her like that, I would be showing up at work with a hard on. "We’re meeting your mother soon. Maybe we can convince her to go to the UK with Sofia."
She moaned and I heard her stretching. "No problem."
Alina still sounded half-asleep, voice soft and raspy.
Last night, after we’d gotten back, we had stood outside her door, talking. About nothing. About everything.
And then she had walked inside, and I had stood there, staring at the closed door, my heart beating like a war drum.
It had taken everything not to follow her inside.
I was driving myself mad. And getting nothing from it.
"Go back to sleep," I muttered.
She made another soft sound, something close to a laugh. "See you later, Luca."
The call ended.
I needed to get my shit together.
By the time we got to the office, Leonard was calling. “They’re ready," he said.
"Bring them here," I said. "Actually, add one more man. The very best we have."
"For who?" Leonard asked.
"My wife."
"Understood."
