LUCA
I was pissed.
Not the usual kind of irritation I carried when things didn’t go as planned.
This felt way too sharp, like it would cut the next person who tried to speak with me.
Victoria had called Alina. Had harassed her.
How the fuck had she even gotten Alina's number? I sighed. This definitely sounded like something Victoria would do. Why did I even suspect that she might steal my gun shipment?
I grabbed my phone and called Victoria. She had some explaining to do.
She picked up. "Luca, darling. It's certainly to nice to hear from you.”
I didn't have time for pleasantries. I gritted my teeth and snapped into the phone. "Be home by seven. We need to talk."
Victoria purred, sounding too happy at her words. "Yes, Daddy."
My jaw ticked. Maybe going to her house was a bad idea, but I didn't want to meet her outside, and not at my office either. What if she came and repeated the same scene she had the last time they met?
I ended the call without another word. Someone knocked at my door.
Luca sat up. "Come in."
Leonard stepped in, three men behind him.
My eyes moved over them.
They were all big, strong men. The kind of men built for war. Exactly what I needed to protect my family.
I already knew Alina wouldn't be happy to have a bodyguard so I needed someone who was strong and smart enough to keep her in line.
He pushed up from his desk. He looked at Leonard. “Take them to the training ground. I want to see what they can do with their hands.”
Leonard nodded. The men didn’t react. Good.
I followed them out, my mind still running hot with irritation. By the time they reached the underground training arena, I had put myself under control.
I wanted the best men protecting Alina and Sofia.
The best meant proving they were worth it.
I turned to face them, waving them towards the middle of the large room. “Fight."
The men looked at me, surprised for a second.
One of them, tall, built like a mountain, crossed his arms. "Fight each other?"
I sat on the bench, stretching out a leg. "You heard me."
They hesitated for only a second before shifting into fighting stands.
I watched, impressed already. The men all had great fighting bodies. I just wanted to see who was the strongest.
The first man jumped at the man closest to him. The man he had been trying to punch, bent and slammed a fist into his ribs from under him.
The man grunted, but barely showed any pain on his face.
The third man, the one who had caught my eye earlier still hadn’t moved.
He stood a few feet away, watching, his face completely blank.
I narrowed my eyes.
The man wore an eye patch, and there was something calculated about the way he was sizing up his opponents.
He wasn’t just waiting. He was studying them, to see their weaknesses. I smiled to myself.
Then, without warning, he ran.
Fast.
I barely caught the move of his wrist before a small knife appeared in his hand.
Where the fuck had he pulled that from?
The mountain man turned too late.
The man with the eye patch stabbed at him with the knife. The other man jumped back just in time, the blade missing him by inches.
I sat up.
This wasn’t just brute force. The man with an eye patch was intense because I knew that if he had wanted to cut the mountain man with that knife, he could have.
Eye patch didn't wait, he struck again, this time heading for his opponent's throat. I felt my body jerk in shock. Was he really going to kill him?
The mountain man dodged, his arm coming up to block the knife.
A thin red line showed on his forearm. It wasn't deep, but it was enough to tell what would have happened to his neck if he hadn't been smart enough to block with this arm.
The man with the eye patch smiled when he fell to the floor, his eyes open with shock, his hands around his neck.
I turned to Leonard. "Who is he?"
Leonard was smiling too, looking excited as he watched the fight. Mink’s son."
I leaned back. Now it made sense.
Mink had been a black hole. One of their best killers. Nothing that clashed with him survived. If he had trained his son, then this man wasn’t just a fighter.
He was a weapon.
My irritation from earlier faded.
Now, I was intrigued. I leaned forward.
The other two were strong, but this one fought like he had nothing to lose.
I liked that.
The man left standing ran, swinging at him.
Eye Patch didn’t step back. He sidestepped at the last second, bringing his knee up hard into the other man's ribs. The hit landed accurately.
The man staggered, just for a second, but it was enough. Eye Patch knocked his legs out from under him. The man hit the ground, coughing, struggling to breathe air back into his lungs.
I stood and called him over.
He walked up, shoulders loose like he hadn’t just killed two men.
"You’ll be guarding my wife," I said.
A grunt. "Thank you."
I held his eyes. "I don’t care who your father is. If my wife is wounded, I’ll kill you myself. If she's killed, I'm coming after the rest of your family.”
His mouth twitched like something about that amused him. "I wouldn’t expect anything else."
Good answer.
I turned to the other two. "You’ll be guarding my sister."
They both nodded, wiping sweat from their face. They were both groaning.
"Either of you have a problem with going to the UK?"
The taller one shook his head. "No, sir."
"Good. Names?"
The taller one went first. "Luke."
The second man gasped. "Rico."
I nodded once. "Leonard, assign new men to whatever positions they were filling before. Make sure they’re solid replacements."
Leonard nodded. "Understood."
I walked out, my mind already shifting to the next thing on my list.
Victoria.
I was still pissed. Still thinking about the fact that she had somehow gotten Alina’s number.
And I wanted answers.
By the time I pulled up outside her house, the sun had set. I stepped out, slamming the car door harder than necessary.
The front door was unlocked. I pushed it open and stepped inside.
"Victoria."
Her voice came from deeper inside. "Living room."
I walked in to find her lying on the couch, wearing only a silk robe. Her hair was wet like she had just stepped out of the shower.
I frowned. "Go put on some clothes."
She pouted, sitting up slowly. "But baby, you used to like me dressed exactly this way."
Something sharp curled in my stomach. Irritation. I used to, I didn't anymore. I had a wife now. What about that was so difficult to understand?
Then she smiled, her hands dropping to the belt of her robe. "Or would you prefer me this way?"
She untied the robe and allowed it to fall off her shoulders to the floor.
She was completely naked in front of me.
