The door opened and a man walked in, a small boy in his arms.
Valerie cried out suddenly, trying to push past Lorenzo to take the boy.
“Leo! Oh my baby,” She said.
Lorenzo held her back, but she fought him, her body jerking against his, her eyes locked on her son.
I felt my heart stop for a moment. He wasn't even my son but from the way he was crying in the man's arms, I could feel his pain.
The man carrying Leo stopped behind Daniel’s chair. The boy squirmed, whimpering softly, his face hidden in the man’s shoulder.
Daniel leaned back. “Valerie’s coming with me.”
Luca lowered himself into his chair. “Not much of an exchange if nothing changes. You're still going with all three of them and Riot after all.”
That was the signal. And I almost smiled.
Marco walked calmly to the door, opened it, stepped outside and locked it.
Daniel wasn't going anywhere unless we let him out.
We had just been waiting for him to bring Leo to us.
I pulled out my phone and texted Pietro.
Bring Riot.
Daniel’s fingers tapped against the table. He had heard the lock. I grinned with glee at the stupefied look on his face.
He knew that without the boy, he had nothing. Without a means of escape, he had even less.
I stepped around him. The boy was still crying.
Valerie was still struggling, trying to yank herself free. “Let me go! He needs me! Can't you see that he's crying?”
Leo’s cries turned louder at his mother's voice.
I slid my hands under him and pulled him away from the man. He was so light. His face was wet, his small hands now holding my clothes.
Daniel didn’t even blink at Leo. He was glaring at me. “Try anything, and you won’t leave this room. Hand him over, that wasn't the deal.”
Luca chuckled, tilting his head. “You really think you’re in control?” He shook his head. “How fucking stupid are you? You have three minutes to get lost. Valerie isn’t going with you. Only your brother is.”
Daniel smirked, trying to appear confident. “Is that so?”
I ignored him, walking over to Valerie. Her breath hitched when she saw me, arms shaking as she reached for Leo.
I placed him in her arms, and she held him so tightly as though she’d never let go.
She was crying. Holding him, rocking slightly, pressing kisses into his hair and then into Maya's hair.
Something twisted in my chest.
No mother should have to beg for her child.
I turned, stepping behind Luca. “Yes, Daniel. You’re leaving with your brother alone.”
Daniel sat up, his smirk fading. “And what makes you think I’ll agree?”
Luca exhaled, unimpressed. “Because we have all your men with guns to their heads.”
The door swung open again. Marco stepped inside. “Riot’s in the car.”
Luca nodded once. “Lorenzo, walk him out.”
Daniel let out a humorless chuckle, standing. “You people are exhausting.”
I smiled. “Get used to it.”
Daniel walked toward the door like he was actually leaving.
Good. Let him go. Let him slink back to whatever miserable hole he crawled out of. Let this end before things spiral any further.
Then, he moved. Too fast.
The gun was in his hand before anyone could stop him, the barrel aimed directly at Valerie and the two kids.
What was this family and no respect for life or children?
Everything in me locked tight. My breath caught.
Leo started crying again. Maya hid her face in Valerie’s shoulder whimpering against her shoulder.
Valerie pressed her children into her chest. She hissed at Daniel. “If you hurt me children, then you better kill me too because I will hunt you like a dog and I will kill you.”
Luca pushed out of his chair so fast it scraped loudly against the floor. His entire body went rigid with rage. His fists clenched at his sides, his shoulders drawn back like a loaded weapon.
“If anything happens to even one of those kids, I’m going to kill all five of your men right now.” His voice was dark, ice-cold. “And then I’ll have no choice but to kill Riot, too. And I will make you watch all that.”
Daniel cocked the gun. The sharp click sent a jolt through my chest.
Would he actually shoot?
No. He wouldn’t be that stupid.
But the look in his eyes said otherwise.
Valerie’s breathing was ragged. She tried to pass the kids to Lorenzo, but he didn’t take them.
He barely moved, his eyes locked on Daniel, his entire body tense like he was waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Shit.
She was thinking something. About to do something.
I moved fast, stepping in front of her. She couldn't do anything right now. She had to stay calm.
She stiffened behind me, and I felt her hesitate. Then her arm brushed mine, and I saw that she was trying to hand me the children now.
I hissed under my breath, keeping my voice low. “Hold them.”
She tried again. If I took those kids from her, I was sure she would jump at Daniel, and I was sure that Daniel would shoot her dead.
“Hold them.” I whispered to her again.
Valerie swallowed and held them closer. Maya let out a small, confused sound, but I didn’t turn to look. My eyes were locked on Daniel.
His hand was shaking with anger. His breathing was sharp, erratic, sounding like a train about to wreck. “Do you really think you’re smarter than me?” His voice was rising, cracking and unstable. “I am going to ruin you.”
I didn’t flinch. I stepped in front of him, blocking the children. “Stop acting like a fool and get out.”
His eyes flashed. The gun turned to me. I almost smiled. Much better.
I didn’t move.
Luca moved in front of me.
“If you even graze my wife,” he growled, “I will burn your entire fucking territory to the ground. Dare it. I will turn your world to darkness, I will make you regret the day your mother birthed you. I will poison the very air you breathe. Dare me.”
Daniel’s attention snapped to him. The gun shifted, now pointing at Luca’s chest.
The room was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat pounding against my ribs at Luca's words. He sounded like a monster. He sounded like The Monster, protecting me.
I shivered from the force of the words because I knew he meant every one of them.
I clenched my fists, laughing at Daniel. “You think you’ll actually make it out of here alive if anything happens to him?”
Daniel’s fingers trembled around the gun.
His breathing was loud and uneven. He was calculating, weighing his options, looking at each of us like we were pieces on a board.
But he was cornered.
And he knew it.
His eyes jumped to the side as he searched for a way out other than the door. Unless he wanted to jump out of Luca's skyscraper to his death, then he really didn't have a choice.
Luca took a slow step forward. His voice was lower this time, but somehow even more dangerous and icy. “You think pulling a gun is going to change anything?”
Daniel’s took a step back.
“You don’t want to do this,” Luca continued. “Put the gun down, walk out of here with some self respect, and take your brother with you. That’s your only way out.”
Daniel’s chest was barely moving. I saw fear mixed with volatile pulses of red hot rage on his face. “You think I’m scared of you?”
Luca’s lips curved into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “I don’t think so. I know you are scared of me, Daniel Alvarado.”
Daniel’s face twisted with anger. The gun didn’t lower.
“You point a gun at a woman holding her children?” I said, making sure he heard just how low a piece of shit I thought he was. “You really are pathetic.”
Daniel’s jaw clenched. “Shut up.”
“Or what?” I lifted my chin. “You’ll shoot me? Then what? You really think you’ll make it to that door alive?”
Daniel chuckled, but it sounded rough and bitter. His grip on the gun loosened just slightly.
Luca took another step closer to him. “Last chance, Daniel.”
A long pause, then Daniel lowered the gun.
He didn’t put it away. But he lowered it.
It was Luca’s turn to chuckle. I could see the restraint in his shoulders, the barely controlled rage.
If Daniel so much as twitched wrong, Luca was going to put a bullet in his skull.
Daniel glanced at Valerie. His lips curled. “This isn’t over.”
Luca tilted his head slightly. “Yes, it is.”
Marco unlocked the door and stepped back to give Daniel and his man room to pass.
Daniel stood there for another second like he wanted to say something else, but then he turned, shoving his gun back into his waistband.
He stalked toward the door, his man following behind him.
Luca watched him leave, his jaw tight.
I let out a slow breath, only now realizing how stiff my muscles were.
Luca turned to me, his voice low. “Are you okay?”
I nodded.
Daniel stopped at the door. He spoke over his shoulders with his gun at his side. “Don't hold your breath, Luca. Watch your back because I'll be back.”
I chuckled. There were so many threats hanging over us. I was tired of all of it at that point.
