I felt guilty as I said the words.
I didn't do anything wrong, but the look of hurt on her face made me feel guilty anyway.
“You don't want children with me?” Alina asked, pain stripping her voice raw.
“Yes. Or with any other woman. I vowed never to have kids.” I bit out.
I had promised myself never to bring a child into the world. The Mafia was deadly. I didn't want my son to lack emotions the way I did, or to see blood and death the way I did everyday.
Alina separated herself from me physically, sat on the bed and held her head. “Why didn't you say this before we got married?” She asked, sobbing.
“We were married in three days. There wasn’t time to discuss everything.”
I was late for work. I had come in to see how she was doing. I didn't intend to start a fight with her.
I looked at my watch and frowned. “Look, I have to go to work now. Maybe we can talk about this later?”
“I want children.” Alina said.
I walked to the door and opened it. “We will talk about this immediately when I return from work.” I said gently, hoping she understood.
I arrived at work late. Elena stepped into my office at once. She handed me some documents to sign and I did.
Soon enough, I went to oversee the shipments as they were brought in from the port. That went smoothly enough.
There was nothing to distract me from Alina. I remembered how tight she had been last night. Sex had never felt that good before.
I knew that I wanted her again. One time would not be enough.
“Marco?”
“Yes, Boss?” Marco said, stopping beside me.
“Send one of the shoppers to get my wife new clothes. Anything she wants.”
Marco chuckled. He lowered his voice. “What? Did she please you that much in bed last night?”
I felt my face darken with anger. “Don't you dare disrespect my wife like that again!” I thundered at him. “What my wife does or does not do is none of your concern.”
He shifted away from me and nodded. “I'll get them. I'm sorry, Boss.” He said and walked away.
I exhaled and controlled my temper as I walked back to my office.
I knew it wasn't really Marco I was angry at. It was the dark cloud hanging over me and Alina. The look on her face had told me that she wanted a child.
And a child was the last thing I could give her. I hoped she would take the clothes and be distracted.
Elena walked into my office. “There's an invitation for you, Mr. Marino .”
“From who?”
“The Talciro family.”
I held out my hand for the invitation, intrigued. The Talciro family was the richest family in Chicago.
They owned a string of seven big tech companies. What could we possibly have in common?
The invitation was to a charity gala ball they were holding. They were inviting me and my wife.
A small note added that Mr. Talciro wanted to have a meeting with me after.
The ball was in three days. They provided the ball dresses and suits. All their guests had to do was show up.
“Yes. You can tell them we'll be there.” I nodded at Elena.
My phone rang and I picked it up. “Marino.”
“Luca?” Victoria said in a whiny voice. “Why have you refused to answer my calls?”
“You're really relentless, aren't you?” I said to her.
I thought she had given up calling me after I blocked her number. But apparently not.
“I am. Baby, I've missed your cock inside me. I'm so wet for you now. Can I come see you?” She said in a soft voice, trying to sound sexy.
“No, Victoria. If my wife sees you, she will tear you to bits. And I respect her. Stay away from me!” I hung up and groaned.
When would she stop? The way she was calling me was becoming obsessive.
I wanted to call Alina to make sure Victoria hadn't called her too, but I knew if Victoria had, Alina would most probably have called me already.
There was nothing left to do at the office.
Things had been pretty calm. Especially with the Alvarado family dealt with for now. I expected they would want to retaliate, but it wouldn't be anything I couldn't deal with.
Alina was not in her room when I got home. I found the housekeeper who told me she was in Valeria's wing.
It didn't escape my notice that she was starting to enjoy being there lately.
I found her holding Maya, feeding the girl something mashed from a baby's plate.
Maya was babbling and laughing, refusing the food. I stood by the door, feeling sick at the sweet look on Alina's face.
“Alina?”
She nearly jumped out of her skin. Maya smiled at me and asked me to carry her.
Valerie was holding Leo.
“Can I speak to you for a moment?” I said to Alina.
She nodded and handed Maya to Valerie who dropped Leo on a high chair.
She walked out of the room, rigid and silent like a stone. I could tell she was anxious but I couldn't reassure her.
“We have been invited to a ball by the Talciro family. I want you to come as my wife.”
Alina shook her head. “I'm not interested in going. And I will not go.”
“Yes you will. You are my wife.”
“Well, when you don't treat me as your wife. You don't get to show me off either. I won't go!” She said sharply. “And you can't make me! Maybe I made a mistake marrying you!”
