ALINA
The next morning, I woke early and dressed fast. I went into the kitchen and made a sumptuous meal for my brother with the chef's help.
I wanted to leave early so I could get back early.
I also didn't want to run into Luca if I was very honest.
The enormous platters of meals were packed into the car and we left.
Lorenzo went with me. We picked up my cousin Enzo at his house and he came into my car with me.
He smiled winsomely, looking very handsome like his father. “It's been a while. I didn't believe Valentina when she said I would be going to see Adriano with you.” He laughed.
I shifted away from him. I wasn't very comfortable with him. I didn't trust Enzo. I was already fighting with his father, why was he smiling and looking so agreeable?
Enzo looked too slick with his gelled black hair and wide, handsome smile.
“I've been busy. Running my father's business takes time and effort.” I looked out of the window.
I really didn't want a long conversation with him.
He must have noticed my discomfort because he kept quiet the rest of the drive. The silence was welcome as I spent it thinking about last night with Luca.
I didn't know what to think anymore. I didn't believe he was serious about never having children, but I knew Luca, he didn't play with his words.
My phone rang and I found it. It was Ethan.
I smiled. I hadn't spoken to him in a while. “Hello, Ethan?”
“I have all the books thoroughly audited. Can we fix a meeting to go over it together?” He said, cutting through the pleasantries.
I sighed. I knew he was probably still pissed about how I had left after the incident with Riot Alvarado.
“I will come there tomorrow. We will meet in the club.”
“Alright, Boss.” He hung up and I slid my phone into my bag.
“Was that Ethan?”
Enzo knew Ethan? I turned to spear him with a razor-sharp look. “Yes it was. Is something wrong?”
He shook his head rapidly. He looked disarming. “No, nothing wrong. I thought Ethan was a murderer and a cheat, but since you're working with him then maybe I am wrong.”
I knew that Enzo didn't actually think he was wrong, he was instead expecting me to explain myself to him. I shrugged. “He works for me now. And if his work is good, then that's all I need to know.”
Soon, we arrived at the gates to my brother's boarding school. I hadn't seen Adriano in months and I was brimming with excitement to see him.
Lorenzo opened my car door and I stepped out, gasping softly.
The school was beautiful. It was an all boys academy for the children of the richest.
The school building itself was an old castle building which had been renovated into a school.
I turned to Lorenzo. “Have the platters of food brought out. I will find Adriano.”
I went up into the school with Enzo beside me. Adriano was waiting in the receiving room already, looking taller and broader than the last time I saw him.
“Adriano!” I called, almost running in my hurry. He stood up, looking very dignified in his suit and came up to me.
He kissed my cheeks, then shook Enzo’s hand, looking at him suspiciously.
I laughed, taking his arm as I led him to one of the eating tables. “You have grown taller than me.”
“That is a lie. They barely feed us here, that would be impossible.” Adriano laughed, folding his long legs.
“Well you have.” Enzo said. “Very soon, you can take over the family business from your sister.”
Adraino looked away uncomfortably.
I increased my voice and pretended Enzo hadn't said that. “Well, I brought enough food to feed you for months. You can put some in your fridge or share with your friends.”
I had the food laid out on the table and watched happily as my brother ate as much of it as he could. It felt good to see that he was safe.
I hadn't expected to see anything wrong, but still it felt good to know that everything was going right.
My plan to marry Luca hadn't been all bad. He had certainly saved me from the fear of other Mafia and cartel lords coming after my father's territories.
No one had dared to even try.
Soon, it was time to go. Adriano sat back, looking satisfied. He licked the last piece of chicken off the bone and dropped it, very content.
A motherly feeling rose inside me. I leaned forward and hugged him, then stood. “Come and walk with me.”
Enzo winked. “Am I not invited?”
I glared at him. What was he trying to do? “I just want a few minutes alone with my brother.”
Enzo waved his hands like he was giving his permission. “By all means. Enjoy.”
Adriano took my arm immediately we stepped out of sight of Enzo. “Why did you bring him? Father never liked him!”
I patted my brother's fingers. “It is fine. Valentina is sick and she didn't want me to come here alone.”
Adraino nodded. “Yes. She called me here. I think she's pregnant.”
My heart twisted painfully. I would be so happy for my sister, but to think that was something I would never have made my stomach sink.
“I hope so. Mother will like grandchildren.” I laughed, pretending I was completely happy.
“I'm glad that you came here. How is father's business?”
We sat down on the edge of a fountain. The entire school property was filled with families and chatter from every corner so I shifted closer to my brother.
“The businesses are running very smoothly. I am keeping my eye on everything for you. When you are eighteen, I will hand it over to you.”
Adriano hunched his shoulders uncomfortably, cleared his throat and scratched at the side of his face. I knew the signs, it meant something was on his mind.
I waited patiently for him. Did he want the family business to be his by seventeen years and he was scared to say it?
Adriano finally sighed. “I was hoping we could have this conversation soon. I don't want to take over the family business.”
I stared at him blankly, my jaw hanging open in shock. The words were so heavy that I almost fell into the fountain.
The world spun slightly. I hadn’t seen this coming, not even in a million years.
