LUCA
“Have the clothes taken to the house. No one touches them until my wife does, understand?” I smoothly commanded Elena.
She nodded and left my office. I knew everything would be done exactly as I wanted.
The clothes for the Talciro gala ball had arrived. The event was in two days and it would be the first time Alina and I would be attending an event together.
I felt sorry that I had hurt her in the morning. I planned to apologize by getting her flowers and a new diamond necklace.
I went personally to pick up the roses and had a selection of diamonds brought in so I could pick.
Once I had both, I went back home. The last person I expected to see immediately I stepped in was my father.
I groaned, pausing at the door, but he had already seen me.
“Come in, Luca.” He said, waving me into the house as though it was his.
I dropped the bouquet of flowers carefully on the table. I could feel my father watching me suspiciously.
“Why are you carrying flowers around like a woman?”
“Father, please. I have had a long day.” I said, wondering why he was here to begin with.
“Your wife isn't home yet. I was hoping I could speak with her.” Father grimaced as he shot another vile look at the flowers.
I sat opposite him and folded my arms, fixing him with a look. “Whatever you wish to say to my wife, you can say to me.”
He shook his head, pushing a pile of documents towards me. “Did she tell you about the new agreements she just signed?”
“Agreements for what?” I asked, refusing to touch the papers.
Everytime my father showed up, he always had something to say that I didn't like.
I hadn't forgotten about him and Alina’s mother showing up at the same hotel but so far, they hadn't been spotted together again.
Father's brow rose angrily. “She's making enquiries about a new set of territories. Why is she doing that? She is a Marino, her territories belong to us.”
A scrubbed at my face wearily. “No, the Costa Mafia does not belong to us. Why would you think that?”
Father stood suddenly, banging his fist angrily on the table. His eyes were burning with anger. “Then why the hell are you married to her?”
I was shocked by his reaction. Father was usually so cool and controlled. “I don't see how it is your business, Father. She is my wife. I have my reasons for marrying her.”
He glowered down at me, puffing like he was one second away from losing control of his anger. “I have my reasons for asking. She has brought us nothing but trouble since she became a member of this family.”
I could feel anger burning its way through my veins, slowly building. I sat up, about to snap back a reply when the door opened and Alina walked in.
She took one look at me and father and stopped by the door.
I smiled at her, keeping my temper under control. “Welcome back, Alina. Father was just leaving.” I said, giving my father a pointed look.
It was his cue to leave but he just didn't get it. He was still staring at Alina, anger burning in his eyes.
I stepped between him and Alina, took the bouquet of flowers from the table, and walked away with Alina beside me.
We stepped into our room together and she sighed, rubbing between her brows. “What was that about?”
“Nothing you need to worry about. How's your brother doing?”
Her eyes went watery for a second and she sniffled, looking sad for a moment.
I thought she would start crying but instead she sighed. “He sends his greeting. He promised he would stay a week here, for the holidays.”
I nodded, though I didn't believe her for a moment. Something was on her mind that she wasn't telling me.
I considered asking her about the new territories but decided not to.
“How is your wrist?” I asked, feeling my stomach crawl with guilt and disgust at myself.
I never hurt women, never. I was disappointed with myself for hurting my own wife.
Alina looked down at her wrist and blinked rapidly. “It hurts less.”
I picked up the bouquet of flowers and handed it to her. Her eyes went wide with shock as she took them from me. “These were for me?” She bit her lip as she asked.
I leaned in and pressed a kiss to her shocked lips. I chuckled. “Yes, Sunshine. They are for you. I'm sorry I hurt your wrist. I hope you feel better soon.”
“Oh.” She gasped, as I kissed her forehead. She bent her head into the flowers and inhaled deeply.
She looked into my eyes. “I'm sorry I screamed at you this morning. But we need to talk about this sooner or later. Especially now.”
I lifted my brows, a questioning look on my face, my heart thumping suddenly with worry. “What do you mean by that?”
There was a knock on the door before she could reply. I stood, lifting her head when she looked down and away from me. “Alina, tell me what's wrong?”
She shook her head, looking up at me.
The person at the door knocked again and I almost growled in annoyance.
I stepped away from her and slammed the door open, my fist folding around the handle.
It was Elena. She had the clothes for the Talciro family dinner with her.
She saw the look on my face and shrank back like I was about to harm her.
I scrubbed my hand over my face and opened the door wider.
“Come in, Elena. I didn't expect you to bring these yourself.”
She grinned, looking as excited as a child suddenly. “No, I wasn't supposed to. But I received another message from the Talciro family. Alina's dress is a custom piece. She needs to come for a fitting. They said it’s urgent.”
