ALINA
What the hell was Victoria doing with Riot Alvarado?
The thought spun around in my head like a tornado as Riot’s grin sharpened into something predatory.
“You’ve got some bloody guts showing your face here after what you did to me,” he hissed, leaning in so close I could smell the whiskey on his breath.
His arm where I had cut off the wrist was tied neatly with a black velvet material threaded with gold.
My spine stiffened, fury crashing through the fear. “I didn’t do anything to you. You did that to yourself. You hurt a woman. You deserve whatever you got.”
Luca stood before I could say more, his body forming a solid wall between Riot and me.
His voice was deadly calm. “Sit down, Riot. Don’t try to cause a scene or you won’t like my reaction.”
Victoria stepped in quickly, her hand reaching for Riot’s arm like she could control him. “He’s not trying to cause a scene, Luca. He’s just surprised to see her. We both are.”
She smiled like this was some sweet accident. I wanted to claw that smirk off her face.
Was she the one who sent that pretend bomb? Had she been the one who sent the bullet too? Were they now working together?
“Surprised?” I scoffed. “You’re walking around with a man who literally tried to beat up his wife and you’re surprised I have a reaction? Don't be surprised when he attacks you next!”
Riot’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t deny it. “You have no idea what you signed up for, Alina. You're a dead bitch. I promise you.”
Luca’s fists curled at his sides.
“You have three seconds to get out of my face,” he said, his voice a razor’s edge. “Or I’ll do something very public that the Talciros will never forgive me for.”
“Fine.” Riot smiled again, slow and venomous. “We’ll talk later, Sunshine.”
“Don’t call her that.” Luca’s voice dropped to something terrifying.
Victoria pulled at Riot’s arm, hissing something under her breath, and after a tense beat, they moved away back into the glittering crowd like nothing had happened.
My knees shook.
Luca turned to me, eyes burning. “Are you okay?”
I nodded, even though I wasn’t.
He sat beside me, jaw tight, hand clenching mine. “I didn’t know he was coming. If I had…”
“I know,” I said quickly, my throat tight. “You would’ve burned the whole place down.”
He didn’t laugh. Just stared at the dance floor, his silence louder than anything.
“Why was Victoria with him?” I whispered.
“I don’t know,” he muttered, low. “But I’m going to find out. Tonight.”
I didn’t say anything.
I was too busy remembering the last time I’d seen Riot Alvarado… and the promise I’d made to myself if I ever had to look him in the eye again.
I was going to destroy him.
And not only had he showed up, he had shown up with my husband's former mistress.
If she was with Riot, then maybe Luca was not sleeping with her.
I was too disturbed by her presence to be gladdened by the thought.
Analide came over to our table. She stopped to talk to Riot and Victoria for a few seconds then came over to our table looking worried.
Analide introduced herself to us. “Welcome to my family's ball. We hold this once a year to make money for charity. We use the money to support patients in need of heart surgery.”
Luca nodded solemnly. “You have my utmost support. We will write a check before we leave.”
Analide smiled winsomely. She turned to me. “May I steal your wife for a few minutes, Luca? I have a few people I would like her to meet.”
“Definitely. I'll drink your father's fine whiskey and try to keep myself distracted.” Luca said.
He squeezed my hand before I walked away from him with Analide. When we passed by Victoria and Riot, I noticed that look of hate on her face and ignored it.
“Well, what did you do to piss off Miss Perfect?” Analide asked as we walked closer to a group of young women.
“Who?” I asked, confused.
“Victoria. She was staring daggers at you.” Analide said. “And you look absolutely beautiful. Just as I expected.”
I flushed under her gaze, feeling my heart expand with joy. “I'm only too happy to do justice to your piece. As for Victoria, I have no idea.”
Analide introduced me to the group of women. There were three of them, two of whom were Analide’s sisters, and the other her mother, Mrs. Talciro.
“Oh. No wonder Analide chose you to model her latest creation. You have given life to the dress.” Her mother gushed, standing to kiss me gently on the cheeks.
Analide chose me to model her dress? How did she even find me? She had said something about seeing my pictures but from where?
“You're as pretty as a doll.” Her youngest sister said. “No wonder you're married to Mr. Marino.”
I smiled at all of them, still caught in my thoughts.
Analide introduced her sister. “This is my mom, Anna, my siblings, Thea and Anastasia. Anastasia is my youngest sibling.”
“I'm honoured to meet you all.”
“We are honoured to meet you. You're the only one who got a custom dress from Analide. She's obsessed with you at the moment.” Anastasia spilled.
Obsessed with me? I turned to Analide who was blushing. I decided I would ask her later.
Analide took my hand. “Oh, don't mind my family. They never skip any opportunity they can find to embarrass me.”
Yes, I understood that. It seemed like the type of thing my sister and brother would do to me. Maybe that was all it was.
I nodded to her family. “I'm pleased to meet all of you.”
Anna smiled up at me. “I expect we will see a lot of you in the future.”
I nodded and backed away from them, Analide still holding my arm. We had barely turned around when we bumped into someone.
My eyes widened as red wine spilled all over my dress, and soaked through to my skin.
I heard a pitiful gasp and looked right into Victoria’s eyes.
She smirked, her lips twisted as she cupped her hand over her mouth and gasped, loud and theatrical. “Oh no, I’m so sorry.”
But her eyes? Her eyes were laughing at me.
