Alina slid into the car without a question.
“What's wrong?” She asked as we drove away.
I grinned, almost smirking at the worried look on her face. She looked cute with her puckered brows. “Nothing's wrong. What could possibly be wrong?”
She looked around us, confused as I drove out. I could almost hear her heart lurch with worry. “Then why am I in your car?” Alina asked.
“You're my wife, Alina. Why wouldn't you be in my car?” I laughed, driving fast toward the surprise I had prepared for her.
“I have to be at the office in an hour.” She muttered.
I knew she had to be at the office, but after the night she had yesterday, I planned a surprise for her, especially because Valerie was leaving and I knew she was worried.
I had someone keeping an eye on Valerie until she was safely out of the country.
We arrived at the store and went inside.
Alina gasped, smiling too wide with delirious happiness. “Is this what I think it is?” She whispered.
“What do you think it is?” I asked. She had a wide look of surprise on her face, and I laughed, feeling satisfied. I was sure she would love my plan.
“An antique book store?” She gasped, running to one of the shelves in the corner.
“Yes. With thousands of books. I thought you would like it here.” I said, lounging on one of the couches while she ran from book to book, touching each of them.
The store was empty because I had booked it out for her. I wanted her to have some peace.
The last few weeks had been tough, all I wanted to do was give her something that helped her relax. I had asked her sister, Valentina, and she had said Alina's only hobby was reading.
Alina ran back to me, breathing hard. She had about ten books in her arms.
She dropped them on the large table. Her eyes smiled at me. “I love it! How did you think of this? I don't think I've ever told you I love reading.”
“I have my ways. I've gotten you a premium membership here, you can come anytime you want.” I told her, hating the way my heart expanded when she kissed my cheeks gratefully.
Her eyes were feverish with excitement as her books were packed and we left the bookstore. She read through each of them as we rode to her office at the club.
I dropped her off but she wouldn't step out of the car. She leaned in and kissed me sweetly, her tongue grazing my lips. “Thank you so much, Luca.”
I caught her lips and kissed her some more, my cock pulsing in my pants. “You should go, or I'll be tempted to take you in my car.”
She giggled softly and went into her office.
I went to work. Immediately I worked into my office, I saw Diavolo. My good mood drained as I swore. What the fuck did he want?
“You're late.” He said, turning towards me.
“And I'm surprised to see you here.” I said. Diavolo was the leader of the Mianka, the group that had been responsible for the attack on me.
“The attack you asked for wasn't possible.”
I felt rage in my chest. “What the hell do you mean by that?”
“Just that the man who ordered it seems to be dead already.” He informed me, looking calm and unbothered.
I sat back, a wondering expression on my face. “Then why are you here?”
“Because I promised to report back to you. He is dead, and the police are digging into his disappearance.”
My brow rose. “His wife reported him missing?” I asked Diavolo, making a link quickly between the man who ordered my hit, and the man who was thrown over my wall.
“How do you know that?” Diavolo asked.
“None of your business. You can leave.” I commanded him, watching as he left.
“Darion is here.” Marco informed me.
“Bring him in.”
I grimaced. The morning had been going so well, why did Daivolo and now Darion have to come and ruin it?
I knew that Alina had been crying in the shower last night, and giving her the books had been my way of making it up to her.
“The police are searching for someone to pin the man's death on.” Darion informed me when he stepped into my office.
“Do they have any suspects?” I asked, not really bothered.
I was more bothered by the fact that someone had most probably paid that man to order a hit on me, and then that someone had killed the man.
How could I find someone who was dead?
“None yet. They have no way of knowing if the man is dead or alive.”
I nodded, relieved. “You can go. Keep me updated.”
With nothing else to do, I called Sofia. I hadn't spoken to my sister since she had traveled.
“Hello, sister?”
“I've been gone a week and you're just now remembering I exist?” Sofia asked, sounding petulant.
Luca felt ashamed of himself but he had been busy and he knew his sister was only teasing him. “How have you been?”
“I've been busy. My bodyguard’s keep me from going anywhere, but it's better than being in Chicago.” She said. “You owe me a new diamond necklace.”
“I do?”
“Yes. How's Alina? I've missed her.”
“You should call her.” I said. I knew Alina didn't have any friends, and that she and Sofia had gotten well when she was in Chicago.
“I will. How's father?” She asked finally.
“What do you mean, how's father? He traveled there to be with you.”
Sofia was silent then she replied. “He didn't.”
“You're telling me father isn't in London?” I asked.
“He never came here. And neither did Alina's mom either.”
I felt his fingers tighten around the phone. Alina's mom was missing and so was my father.
I remembered the both of them coming out of the same hotel room and I felt my throat constrict.
What were those two doing?
