I still had Maya and Leo in my arms. My heart was beating wildly with anger and displeasure.
“Take the children into the car, it's not safe here.” I commanded Lorenzo who took Maya and Leo from me.
The crowd shifted as we walked away. Alina was shaking like a leaf in the breeze, as tears stained her face.
“I should have forced her to stay. She never would have died if I'd forced her to stay.” She cried, sniffing as I lifted her into my arms.
“There was nothing you could have done, Baby. I promise you.” I took her to the car and drove away.
She sat up, heaving as she cleaned her face. I had never seen Alina break down this way and it just made me want to find the people who had killed Valerie and torture them slowly.
“Let me see the message she sent.” She held her hand out.
I shook my head. “You'll see it when you wake from your rest.”
She glared at me, her red eyes making her appear fragile. “Give it to me now, Luca.”
I knew she was serious. I handed her Valerie's phone and Alina gagged when she saw the blood on it.
She held it gingerly as she opened the phone and read the text.
“I know you warned me. I should have listened. I give you my children. Please, make sure they don't suffer the same fate I did.”
“What does she mean by that? What does she mean by that?” Alina cried, hunching her shoulders as she cried, snot running out of her nose.
Immediately we reached the house, I took her to the shower and washed her slowly, then dressed her, but she refused to sleep.
“Mr. Kwan is coming for dinner. And I want to see Maya and Leo.” She said, her face cold and hard.
I knew she wouldn't take no for an answer. I pushed my rage back, and made Lorenzo bring her the kids then I walked away.
I called my private investigator. “I know you're busy, Darion. But I need information.”
“How soon?” he asked. “I need it now. Right now. Twenty thousand dollars will be yours if you get it before nightfall.”
“Done.”
I told him what I knew about Valerie and the black car that had driven away just as I arrived.
When I returned to Alina, she was holding Maya and Leo. She had both of her hands around them. She looked tiny and frail, almost broken.
I tried to take the children from her but she jerked back. “Don't touch them. Let me hold them.” She said, silent tears rolling down her face.
I sat quietly with her until she stopped crying, battling the urge to go out there and find the beasts who killed Valeria and kill them myself.
They had rammed her car when they knew there were children inside the moving vehicle, and now they had made them orphans.
She finally sighed and stood. By then, the children were sleeping. She took them to her room and laid them on the bed.
“I know you're trying to find those men. When you do, will you let me know?” She asked, turning to me with a face void of emotions.
“Alina…let me deal with this.” I took her into my arms but she jerked away, staring up at me with wide eyes.
“I didn't save her. My father killed her father, and now she's dead because I hurt Riot. No. I want to skin those men myself.” She snarled angrily, clenching her teeth.
I felt fury darken my face. I nodded snappily. “After dinner. I'll take you into the dungeon with me.”
She nodded, and walked away.
The next time I saw her, she was dressed for dinner in a glittering black dress with slits up the thighs.
I had never seen a woman more stunning.
“Kwan is here.” I told her, taking her hand and leading her to dinner.
She didn't smile. She kissed Kwan on his cheeks when she reached the table. “Thank you for inviting me.” Kwan said, his hand lingering on her waist.
“I should be thanking you.” Alina said, standing in his embrace a few seconds before stepping out.
I looked between them, jealousy blooming in my chest. What was going on between them?
Analide took my arm. “Did Alina tell you? She almost broke her neck!”
“I'm sure even if I did, it's not your place to tell him.” Alina said sharply.
“What did I do? I was only trying to break the tension. I'm sorry for being a nuisance.” She said, her bottom lip trembling as tears sprung up in her eyes.
“Alina. I know you're angry, but there's no need to be so sharp with Analide.” I said.
“Is there a need for you to defend her then?” She asked, rolling her eyes.
Dinner was brought out and we all ate. Kwan smiled softly at Alina and she kept her attention on him, talking and smiling with him, while Analide kept questioning about me and Alina.
I was displeased with the attention she was paying him. I stood and left the table, calling Darion again.
“I've found the men. I'll send you their location right now.” Darion said.
I instructed Marco to pick up the men and take them to the dungeon.
“Analide! How dare you?” I heard Alina's voice ring out.
As I watched, she lifted a glass of water and poured it over Analide’s head, ensuring she was soaked.
Analide bit her lip. “I'm sorry, it was a mistake. You know I'd never do anything to hurt you.”
“Alina, what's going on here?”
Alina turned to me, glaring with her eyes hot enough to shoot lasers. She pointed a shaking finger at Analide. “Why don't you ask her?”
