                    ALINA
Analide hurried over to Luca. “I swear I didn't do anything wrong.” She sobbed, hiding her face in her hand.
“Alina, you didn't answer me.” Luca said coldly. I could tell he was angry and it only fanned the embers of my own anger. “Analide is a guest in our house, whatever she did, you shouldn't have drenched her in water.”
Why did he keep defending Analide? Was there something going on here that I didn't understand?
I turned to Kwan. “I'm sorry for ruining dinner for you, Mr. Kwan.” I apologized, smiling at him though I wanted to grimace.
Kwan took my fingers and patted them gently. “You don't need to worry at all…I should take my…”
Luca tore my hand out of Kwan’s hand. “Damn it, Alina. I know you heard my question.”
I looked up at him tiredly. “Your innocent Analide told reporters that she saved my life twice today.”
“What?” Luca asked, looking in confusion from me to her.
“Just in case you didn't know. It was Kwan who saved my life.” I sighed, walking Kwan to the door.
Once he drove away, I walked back into the house. Luca was standing beside Analide who was still sniffling delicately. He patted her shoulders tenderly and I felt jealousy stab my chest.
“Analide, I'm sorry for drenching you with water. I'm sure you were only trying to help.” I apologized to her through clenched teeth.
I could see on Luca's face that he wanted me to apologize.
Analide ran over to me and hugged me. “I'm sorry. I only said that because Kwan was holding you and I didn't want it to look like you're a nasty woman. Please forgive me.”
I nodded and pulled my nose away from her cloying perfume. “It's fine, Analide. You should go, it is getting late.”
“Will you still look at my designs?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
She left and I walked away. Luca stopped me with his broad shoulder blocking the way. “What was that with Kwan?”
“What do you mean?”
“Why were you looking and talking to him that way?”
I ran a hand through my hair. “Luca please. I have had a long day. I can't deal with your jealousy on top of it all.”
I walked around him and went up to my room. I slid into bed beside Leo and Maya who were still sleeping.
Not only had Analide lied, but she had made it seem like it was for my own good. What kind of person was she? My heart twisted.
I wasn't sure I trusted her good intentions anymore.
I woke up suddenly, not even realizing I had fallen asleep. I heard footsteps outside my door like someone was hesitant to knock.
I walked to the door and pulled it open. It was Marco. “Luca said the men have arrived.” He said.
“The men who killed Valerie?” I asked, anger curling like smoke in my throat. My stomach twisted with astronomical amounts of hate and disgust.
He nodded. I went back into my room, changed into jeans and a shirt and went to the dungeon.
Luca had already gone to work on them. I was angry at him, but I was more angry at the three bastards chained to the wall, their faces bloodied and swollen, yet somehow still breathing.
“You brought her down here?” he asked Marco when he saw me, his voice clipped with tension. “Alina…”
“Don’t stop me,” I said, brushing past him. My voice didn’t even sound like mine. It was too calm and cold.
My fingers clenched and unclenched as I stepped closer to the man who was looking away from me, like I disgusted him.
I slapped him hard. “Look at me.”
When he didn’t, I grabbed the bucket beside Luca and dumped the freezing water over his head. He gasped, jerking upright with a choked breath.
“Now you see me, don’t you?” I said, shoving his blood-matted hair back so I could see his face.
They tried to shift away when I moved to the table filled with tools. My heart drummed louder with every step I took.
I didn’t even have to think about it. I picked the first thing my fingers touched. It was a pair of pliers.
“You know what you’ve done to me?” I asked, my voice shaking not from fear but rage. I turned back, standing in front of them. “Do you understand what the hell you’ve done to me?”
No one answered.
“I lost someone who could have been my friend. I haven’t slept in weeks.” I shouted.
One of them flinched. I smiled.
“Do you get it now?” I asked again, and without waiting, I yanked his pinky finger sideways with the pliers.
A sickening crack echoed across the stone room. He howled, twisting in his chains, but I didn't stop.
My anger didn’t ebb. It only sharpened. Each scream felt like music to the monster in my chest.
I moved to the second man. “You smiled when I came in here,” I whispered. “Was it you who drove the car that rammed her?”
“No, no…I swear…”
I drove the pliers into his thigh. He screamed and bucked against the restraints.
Luca was silent, but I could feel his eyes on me. I didn’t stop. I couldn’t stop. My hands were trembling, but I kept moving.
I kept hurting each of the men in the worst way I could.
It wasn't until I heard my own breath coming out in sobs, my shirt stained with blood that wasn’t mine, that I felt Luca’s arms come around me from behind.
“That’s enough, Alina.”
“No…” I tried to push him off, but he tightened his grip and lifted me off the floor. “Let me go, Luca!”
“You’ll kill them. And then we’ll never find out who sent them,” he said, voice low in my ear.
I stopped struggling just enough to breathe; just enough to realize my hands were shaking too badly to hold anything anymore.
I turned slowly in his arms, my chest heaving. My face was wet with tears I hadn’t even realized I shed and I cried into his shirt.
Luca made me sit and watch as he went back to the men and tortured them some more, until they finally broke down.
The third man coughed, spitting blood on the floor. “We don’t know who sent us,” he croaked. “We just got the job. An anonymous wire. But the bullet… the bomb… it was us. We were paid to scare her. We didn’t know it would… go that far.”
Luca stared at them. His jaw clenched. “You're sure?”
“We swear,” another wheezed. “We were told to hurt her. To send a message.”
I wiped my face with the back of my hand. “Well, message received,” I muttered, turning to leave.
